As Donald Trump continued on with his 12-day foreign trip, the president made his way to South Korea. While addressing leaders of the country during his latest speech, Trump decided to get a plug in for his Golf Resort in New Jersey.
Trump in South Korea
Donald Trump shocked the world just one year ago when he pulled off the historic upset over Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton to become the 45th President of the United States.
Following his inauguration, many people around the world were left wondering how the former host of "The Apprentice" would represent America on the world stage. During the 10 month that he's been in office, Trump has created a constant stream of controversy, with much of the backlash stemming from his questionable policy proposals and reckless rhetoric on social media. In recent months, Trump has engaged in a heated war of worlds with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Following Kim ordering the launch of several test missiles in the region, Trump decided to lash out on Twitter, referring to the leader of North Korea as "Rocket Man" and "Little Rocket Man." While addressing the United Nations last month, Trump doubled down on that nickname, prompting Kim and other high-ranking officials in North Korea to fire back, accusing the president of being a "dotard." Fast forward to present day and Trump spoke to the South Korea Assembly about the issues with North Korea, but couldn't help but to bring up golf and one of his private resorts, as reported by CBS News on November 7.
While addressing the South Korea Assembly on Wednesday morning local time, Donald Trump talked up his admiration for the country and its people, before turning his attention to the sport of golf. "Korean golfers are some of the best on earth," Trump said to a round of applause. "In fact, and you know what I am going to say," he added. "The women's U.S. Open was held this year at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey," Trump pointed out.
"It just happened to be won by a great Korean golfer. Sung Hyun Park. And eight of the top 10 players were from Korea. And the top four golfers. One. Two. Three. Four. The top four were from Korea," he went on to say. "Congratulations, congratulations," Trump concluded.
The president continued on with his speech, getting into more serious matters, most notably by sending a warning to North Korea.
"The (Kim) regime has interpreted America's past restraint as weakness. This would be a fatal miscalculation," Donald Trump said of North Korea. "I say to the North, do not underestimate us. And do not try us," he noted.
Twitter reacts
As expected, those who oppose Donald Trump weren't pleased with the president for bringing up his golf resort. "Donald Trump is in #SouthKorea talking about his golf course! I wonder if he even knows what happened at #PorkChopHill. @realDonaldTrump is such an embarrassment to America!" one tweet read.
"Donald Trump basically mashed together a bunch of facts somebody taught him about the history of the Korean peninsula, and also threw in a plug for his golf club in New Jersey, and called it a speech," one Twitter user added.
"In DT's speech to South Korea Ntl. Assembly he manages to work a plug for his Trump golf club in New Jersey. Jaw-dropping madness," another tweet noted.
