Former Congressman and US Representative Anthony D. Weiner was sentenced to 21 months imprisonment and three years of supervised release for sexting an underage girl on Monday, CNN reported. Weiner is the estranged husband of Huma Abedin, a senior aide to Hillary Clinton, and they have a 5-year-old son Jordan.

The details of Weiner's accusations

Prosecutor Denise Cote of the New York Southern District said that "This is a serious crime that deserves serious punishment." She noted that Weiner has a strong addiction which needs special treatment. Weiner could get up to 10 years in federal court, but the government advised 21 to 27 months.

Anthony's wife Huma Abedin filed for divorce in the middle of May when her husband pleaded guilty. She did not come to the latest court hearing. Weiner's term serving will start on November, 6.

The ex-congressman wore his wedding ring on the day of his hearing. He cried when the court announced his sentence. The accusations were based on internet monitoring which revealed that Weiner had been sending obscene material to a teenage girl for many months. Weiner and the girl had been communicating with each other on social media sites, including Skype, Twitter, Snapchat, etc.

The prosecutors said that the girl informed Weiner about her age at the beginning of their communication but he asked her to send her nude pictures, anyway - which she did.

He also sent her pornography, USA Today reported. Anthony D. Weiner was declared a sex offender. Weiner’s attorney Arlo Devlin-Brown noted that his client did have sexual conversations with many adult females, but none of the women was underaged except for this last case, Reuters reported.

Weiner destroyed his life and career

Weiner's career suffered from his other sexting issues. He had to leave the Congress after sharing an explicit picture on Twitter six years ago.

Four years ago, Weiner decided to start a political career again and became a candidate to be a mayor of New York. After two months of his participation, his previous sexual conversations with a 22-year-old woman were revealed and that ruined everything, according to the USA Today.

At that time, his wife Abedin tried to help him and announced that she had forgiven her husband.

During 2016 presidential election, the FBI found that Weiner's computer stored Hillary Clinton's personal emails, which could have possibly influenced Clinton's failure. This case led to a huge scandal and Weiner was criticized.
