22-year-old Bakari Henderson, a newly-graduated student of the University of Arizona, was celebrating his graduation in a bar in Laganas on the island of Zakynthos in Greece on Thursday night. After another customer approached Henderson and his friends, an argument ensued at around 3 a.m., leading to an all-out fight. The fight continued outside the premises, leading to Henderson being beaten to death.

According to police, a 32-year-old British bouncer of Serbian descent along with a 34-year-old Greek barman were arrested for the killing, along with six Serbian nationals.

Fight breaks out in Laganas bar

In started in the bar in Laganas, where two men approached Henderson and his friends, leading to an argument. Officials said the fight then moved outside where other people joined in. According to surveillance TV footage taken by police from shops in the area, the men continued hitting and kicking Henderson, even when he was down, lying on the ground and apparently unconscious.

Both groups had been heavily drinking

ABC News quotes Pavlos Kolokotsas, the mayor of Zakynthos as saying both groups involved in the incident had been drinking heavily. Firstpost quotes the Greek media as saying Henderson sustained serious head injuries in the fight and was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital. Henderson’s parents were due to arrive on the island later on Saturday.

A U.S. Embassy official in Greece said in a statement that they were in communication with authorities and had offered consular assistance for Henderson’s family. They also went on to offer their condolences to his family and friends.

Bakari Henderson was planning his own business

Henderson, who originally hailed from Austin, Texas, graduated in May from the University of Arizona with a business finance degree.

According to friends and family, Henderson was planning on launching his own fashion line.

The Henderson family said in a statement that they are devastated by the loss of their beloved son. The statement went on to say Henderson enjoyed spending time with friends and family as well as traveling and meeting new people. According to the family, the college graduate “loved life to the fullest” and was an inspiration to everyone he met.

Robert C. Robbins, president of the University Of Arizona, said everyone on the campus was saddened and shocked by the untimely death of their recent graduate. He said all their hearts and prayers are with his family and friends. Robbins added that it is always a tragedy to see a young life end before it has really begun.
