On Wednesday night, Donald Trump addressed a crowd of supporters in Iowa during a re-election rally. During his speech, Trump highlighted his plan to tackle the MS-13 street gang, which he continued to do on social media the following day.

Trump on MS-13

It was just two years ago that Donald Trump stood on the floor of Trump Tower in New York City, and with his family beside him, announced his plan to run for president.

The most memorable moment from his speech was when he addressed his plans for immigration reform, infamously labeling those who enter the United States illegally from Mexico as "rapists" and "murderers." Trump's remarks resulted in instant backlash from his critics and the mainstream media, but became one of his biggest talking points that helped garner his support from conservatives and others worried about immigration. While the former host of "The Apprentice" has focused on a variety of issues relating to immigration reform, he's recently shifted attention onto the MS-13 street gang that originated in Los Angeles, California in the 1980s.

The gang has since spread from coast to coast in the United States, and is estimated to have a membership that exceeds more than 70,000. Trump has vowed to break up the gang, and addressed it during his speech in Iowa. After the news broke on Thursday that a major arrest was made in relation to MS-13, Trump decided to gloat during a June 22 Twitter post.

Taking to Twitter on Thursday night was Donald Trump, as the commander in chief didn't waste anytime taking credit for a recent arrest regarding MS-13. "As promised, our campaign against the MS-13 gang continues," Trump tweeted out, before attaching a Breitbart article with the title, '@ICEgov Busts 39 MS-13 Members in New York Operation.'" In a follow-up tweet, the president pushed to build his controversial wall between the United States and Mexico.

"Mexico was just ranked the second deadliest country in the world, after only Syria. Drug trade is largely the cause. We will BUILD THE WALL!" he wrote.

The article in questions comes as another story recently broke about Melvin Marquez-Sanchez, an MS-13 gang member who was convicted and sentenced to 40 years in prison for the murder of two fellow gang members. Trump was quick to brag about what took place, but that didn't stop his critics from speaking out.

Twitter reacts

Following Donald Trump's tweet about MS-13, social media critics wasted no time in firing back at the president. "Insert joke about White House having more thugs than MS-13," Austin Braun tweeted, before adding, "Also lol you just tweeted a BREITBART article.

FAKE NEWS."

"I honestly never even heard about this gang until you started tweeting about it nonstop… why are you ignoring today's biggest news?" William LeGate wrote in response, while rhetorically asking, "Don't want to hype up your #WealthCare plan only for it to fail again?" "YOU just showed the whole world: When you're scared, you BLUFF. Dangerous! " author T. Rafae Cimino tweeted out to Donald Trump. "Cool, only about 10,000 active members left to go! Congrats on getting less than half of one percent! What a fulfilling victory!" Jules Suzdaltsev tweeted with sarcasm.

"What about the Russian Gangs that You colluded with? When will they be busted?" another tweet wondered. The negative reaction continued, as those who oppose Donald Trump continue to hold the president's feet to the fire on a wide range of issues.
