US President Donald Trump has a history of going after people he doesn't agree with politically and yesterday, he decided to have a go at the Mayor Of London Sadiq Khan in the aftermath of the terror attacks in the London Bridge area. However, Trump's ill-advised tweet backfired spectacularly as Khan rebuffed him in the most disarming way in his statement later in the day.
An insensitive tweet
After the terror attack in the London Bridge area on Saturday night, the British authorities had been able to neutralize the threat within eight minutes. The Mayor of London stated at the time that the citizens of the city need not be alarmed at the sight of so many police personnel in the city. However, US President Donald Trump twisted the statement to mean that the Mayor had downplayed the threat of terror and insinuated as much in a Tweet.
His tweet was widely condemned online by people on both sides of the Atlantic. The President went after the Muslim mayor of the city even before sharing his condolences with the people of a grieving city.
Later in the day, Mr. Khan's spokesperson stated that the Mayor had far more important things in his mind in the aftermath of the terror attack than responding to Donald Trump's tweets about him. He added that the President had taken his statements out of contexts in a malicious way to paint as being soft on terror.
Another unfortunate moment for the President
The US President Donald Trump has over the years made plenty of statements over Twitter that have only caused a certain level of embarrassment for all concerned. In this latest instance, he went after the elected Mayor of the capital city of one of America's closest allies and that is something that will certainly not go down well with the ruling establishment in the United Kingdom.
Trump continued to politicize the terror attack by repeating that a travel was necessary to stop these incidents.
In an apparent rebuke to the US President, Sadiq Khan's spokesperson said, "The Mayor is busy working with the police, emergency services, and the government to co-ordinate the response to this horrific and cowardly terrorist attack and provide leadership and reassurance to Londoners and visitors to our city."
The police in London reacted admirably to the alarming news coming out of the London Bridge area on Saturday night and in spite of the fact that 7 people lost their lives; the damage could have been higher if the law enforcement authorities had not reacted with such promptness.
