Usually what most wedding guests go home with, is a hangover and some stray hair confetti, but not so for the 1,200 people who were invited to be on the grounds of Windsor Castle during the nuptials on May 19. The 1,200 lucky people walked away with a commemorative gift tote that was royal-themed goodies to mark the big day. A report by the Daily Mail presented most of the information used in this article. The official royal totes had the Duke and Duchess of Sussex monogrammed initials, a commemorative magnet, Windsor Castle water, a giant chocolate coin, shortbread, and a gift voucher offering a 20 percent discount at Windsor Castle Shop.

Meet the woman who made five figures from her royal wedding gift bag

The creative 31-year-old who tried to sell the gift bag, identified as Claire Oliver, works in HR for Troup Bywaters in the United Kingdom. She lives in Southeast London but is originally from Cambridge. She was invited to the wedding based on the fact that she was regarded as a Community Champion. This is because of her good work in Troup waters to help young adults gain experience through an apprenticeship. After receiving the royal gift bag, she posted individual photos of all the items in the bag on eBay, including a close-up shot of the shortbread, with “Traditional handbag shortbread specially made for the wedding day.” In less than 24 hours it generated more than 80 bids running in the thousands.

The commemorative gift bag was eventually sold for $25,038.

The listings on eBay were ranging from $585- $70,000. Some of the sellers even photographed their bags outside St George’s Chapel to ensure they looked genuine on eBay. While others were selling their gift bags, some others were also selling the PDF version of the wedding order of service for $8.80, when it can be downloaded for free from the Kensington Palace website.

About the royal wedding

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle married on Saturday, May 19. The couple’s decision to get married on a Saturday went against tradition, as royal weddings usually take place on a weekday. The Queen got married on a Thursday, while the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had their wedding on Friday. After the service, the couple traveled around Windsor Castle in a horse-drawn carriage, providing an opportunity for members of the public to see them and join in with the celebrations.
