Wondering which stores are open on Memorial Day? It's a great weekend to find a bargain so Walmart, Target, or Lowe's for a new gas grill, or Costco, Publix, or Trader Joe's for last-minute grub for your cookout, here's the scoop on the store hours on Monday for popular department stores, mall stores, and supermarkets.
Memorial Day is a federal holiday, so most banks, state and federal offices, and schools will be closed and there will be no mail delivery on May 29. However, it's a big day for sales, so you can shop 'til you drop at many stores across the U.S.
on the holiday, with a few exceptions.
Post office open or closed Monday?
Presidents Day, originally named Washington's Birthday, is a federal holiday. That means most government offices will be closed all day. The U.S. Post Office will be closed and there will not be any mail delivery on Memorial Day. In addition, FedEx and UPS will only be delivering packages that are shipped "critical."
Will banks be open on Memorial Day?
Banks and credit unions will be closed, although you may want to call ahead. Some big banks will open their supermarket branches limited hours on holidays. But, for the most part, expect your bank to be closed — use an ATM or online banking if you can't wait 'til the Tuesday.
Stock market, courts, state and federal offices
If it's not a retail store or restaurants, there's a good chance everything else is closed. Federal and state courts, the department of motor vehicles, IRS offices, and just about every government office will be closed on May 29. The stock market will also be closed for the day and trading will resume on Tuesday morning.
Restaurants and retail stores
Shop 'til you drop on Memorial Day. Many storeswill be offering big discounts during the holiday weekend, especially on clothing. If you need to get to a big box store like Target, Walmart, or KMart, you can expect these retailers to be open for business. Some stores may modify their hours for the holiday, but, for the most part, they will be open.
If you shop at Costco, cross that store of your list. All locations will be closed on Monday, May 29. Most mall stores, including American Eagle, Forever 21, Macy's, Victoria's Secret, Old Navy, Gap, and Charlotte Russe will be open on Monday. Most have Memorial Day sales in progress, including Old Navy's annual $1 flip flop sale.
Most chain restaurants will be open on Memorial Day, just in case you don't want to fire up the grill.
