The PlayStation Awards bestowed "Monster Hunter World" with the coveted Quadruple Platinum Prize, an award created solely to honor those elite games that succeed in shipping over four million copies.
While the ceremony permits Japanese and Asian fans to vote for their favorite titles published during a specific period, the PlayStation Awards is chiefly concerned with the commercial side of things.
As sales are the primary marker, an argument can be made that Sony's ceremony is among the more legitimate in the business. Subjectivity is simply not part of the equation.
"The Last of Us Remastered" and "Persona 5" secured a Platinum Prize for moving over one million units.
Capcom's best-selling game ever
Published during January 2018, "Monster Hunter: World" drew near-universal praise from critics. Sitting with an impressive aggregate score of 90 percent on Metacritic.com, the Action RPG earned praise for its thrilling gameplay, gorgeous visuals, and accessibility.
Well-known for its crushing difficulty, Capcom's franchise can quickly overwhelm anyone unfamiliar with the series; however, "Monster Hunter: World" is comfortably the least intimidating entry.
Selling more than 10 million units across all platforms, Capcom's strategy clearly paid dividends!
Fans vote for 'God of War,' 'Marvel's Spider-Man,' and 'Fortnite'
Any game released between October 2017 and September 2018 was eligible for the PlayStation Awards' User's Choice Awards, with the ten highest voted titles winning the prize. Unsurprisingly, "Monster Hunter World" managed to rank among this list, but some of the other entries are slightly more unexpected. As two of Sony's biggest exclusives of the year, "God of War" and "Marvel's Spider-Man" were shoe-ins for the award, while "Fortnite's" inclusion should amaze nobody.
The latest entries in astonishingly popular Japanese franchises, "Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age" and "The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV ~The End of Saga~" received enough votes to justify a spot.
The turn-based JRPGs were joined by "Dark Souls Remastered," "Yakuza: Kiwami 2," and "Assassin's Creed Odyssey." Last but certainly not least, "Detroit: Become Human" rounded up the PlayStation Awards' fan-voted segment.
Sony also honored "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR," "Gran Turismo Sport," and "No Heroes Allowed! VR" for their contributions to PlayStation VR.
