'Assassin's Creed' themed free DLC coming to 'Final Fantasy XV'

In the world of gaming, collaborations between two game publishers on two franchises are very rare. However, this is what seems to have happened between two of the major game developers in the industry. Square Enix has announced that it is working together with Ubisoft to bring a bit of "Assassin's Creed" into "Final Fantasy XV," through a DLC.

What is the collaboration about?

Square Enix is releasing a free DLC for its popular "Final Fantasy XV," which will add an event to the game called the Assassin's Festival in Lestallum. The town will be decorated in specific ways so that it is reminiscent of the "Assassin's Creed" game's settings. Players will be able to take part in several mini-games and activities that will also represent the "Assassin's Creed" titles.

The DLC will be released on August 31 throughout both the platforms in which "Final Fantasy XV" has launched. On August 30, players who have obtained the Dream Egg from Moogle Chocobo Carnival event will get a special outfit for Noctis, which is said to be similar in style to the attire that the Assassins wear in Ubisoft's celebrated franchise.

Noctis will also gain the ability to move and act in certain ways which are commonly seen in the "Assassin's Creed" games.

A trailer released by the publisher shows what the event will look like. It shows Noctis and his companions enter the town and then engage in activities such as climbing the high buildings and then jumping off these buildings into bales of hay placed underneath these structures. Known as leaps of faith, these jumps are how Assassins in the Ubisoft games are shown to traverse certain areas of the map. The trailer also shows off the ability to equip a hidden blade and assassinate nearby enemies while hiding inside piles of hay. All of these features would be immediately recognizable to fans of the "Assassin's Creed" franchise.

This DLC was being planned for a long time

Ubisoft revealed in a blog post that the collaboration between the two studios was discussed almost three years ago at an informal meeting of the executives. The company also revealed that hints of this mashup were visible through small easter eggs in the November 2016 trailer for "Final Fantasy XV" and the subsequent trailers of "Assassin's Creed Origins" at E3 and Gamescom this year.

There is currently no information on whether "Final Fantasy XV" will somehow make an appearance on "Assassin's Creed Origins." However, it would be quite interesting to see how Ubisoft can integrate the vastly different settings into one believable DLC. The Assassin's Festival in "Final Fantasy XV" will be a limited time content, which will end on January 31, 2018.
