During EA's Play event at the recently held 2017 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), a lot of fans were expecting the publisher to unveil the latest installment in its "NHL" ice hockey simulation video game series. Unfortunately, "NHL 18" was a no-show at the event. Now, EA has finally unveiled the brand new game and released its first video trailer as well as new details regarding its new Modes and features.

Official unveiling

The latest installment in the long-running franchise, which all started with "NHL Hockey" for the Sega Mega Drive in 1991, was officially unveiled at the 2017 NHL Awards.

The game's first trailer was also unveiled, which gave fans a glimpse into some of the features and new modes that will be coming to the latest title.

Following the franchise's yearly tradition, EA also officially announced the upcoming game's cover star, Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid. Picking the 20-year old National Hockey League player was likely an easy decision given his recent awards and accomplishments within the league.

Brand new features

"NHL 18" was revealed to sport several new features, including what the company calls its "Creative Attack" controls. The feature basically allows players to execute ultimate moves that include epic one-handed moves, skillful maneuvers, and various trick shots.

On the other hand, defenders will also be able to execute different defense moves via a new "Defensive Skill Stick" feature.

Players who want some quick action can now access a new "NHL Threes" mode, which has been described to be an arcade-inspired mode complete with fast-paced gameplay and quick action. The new mode can be played with friends using local co-op or via online matchmaking.

Those who want to try out a more realistic experience can go through the "Franchise" mode. Other modes include an "Ultimate Team" mode with new solo challenges and a new "Hockey Training Camp" mode for those who want to brush up on their hockey skills.

Beta and release

Prior to the game's release, EA will be holding a beta test for the game that will include three modes, namely "Online Versus," "NHL Threes," and the "Hockey League" mode.

The beta officially starts on July 25 with registrations now open on the game's official website. "NHL 18" is scheduled to be released on Sept. 15 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Pre-order buyers will get the game a few days earlier that others on Sept. 12.
