The sandwich has become an American classic over the years and nowadays you can’t drive far without seeing a different sandwich shop along the way. Why do we celebrate?

It seems like there's a national holiday for something every day of the year nowadays. On November 3, food lovers across the US can find great deals at some of the most popular deli and sandwich shops everywhere.

So why the celebration? As legend has it, this holiday was created in honor of the 4th Earl of Sandwich, John Montagu.

Back in 1762, Montagu, a British statesman, got hungry during a game of cards. While he always loved to have pieces of beef and cheese while playing cards, this time he was in a marathon poker battle with friends and didn’t want to pause to eat.

The BBC indicates that the Earl asked for the particular serving so that he could eat while continuing to play cards and his friends asked "to have the same as Sandwich," according to the British Sandwich Association. Sandwich, meaning the meat was "smashed" between two pieces of bread - making the meat easier to hold.

Thus a legend was born.
