The new year 2022 is here, and we already have many awesome video games on the way. But some of these games are actually quite late to the party. Whatever the cause was, be it internal conflicts, financial woes, or even premature cancellations, these upcoming games ended up missing their intended launch dates and have been M.I.A. for several years.

However, some of those games have been miraculously thrust back into the spotlight as they are chartering for new releases this year and beyond. Here is a shortlist of such lucky titles.

1

‘Beyond Good & Evil 2’ (TBA)

Ever since ‘Beyond Good & Evil’ became a pariah back in 2003, its fans had been playing a new game called “Don’t blink or you’ll miss the sequel’s announcement.’ For several years, they scour the internet for clues on its development. But nothing seemed to click outright. That’s because development had fallen into the pits of hell. Fortunately, ‘Beyond Good & Evil 2’ was finally revealed at E3 2017, though it is a prequel to the original game, albeit its title.

2

‘Dead Island 2’ (TBA)

The sequel to one of the best zombie survival horror games had devolved into a joke that writes itself. ‘Dead Island 2’ saw its initial development, an endeavor that started as far back in 2014, likened to a pinball machine as it was being passed around from studio to studio with no end in sight. The project was bounced between four studios, starting from Yager Development in 2012 only to be passed over to Sumo Digital, Dambuster, and finally to Deep Silver in 2019.

3

‘Six Days In Fallujah’ (PS4/5, XBO/SX/S, PC) (2022)

Most tactical military shooters attempt to provide depth of realism. But most don’t always come close to the point of warranting a cancellation. Enter ‘Six Days In Fallujah,’ a game that was gutted for depicting a moment in human history that hit too close to home. Now, it’s making a comeback on modern hardware that makes the experience all the more haunting with its more photo-realistic visuals and procedurally generated environments.

4

‘System Shock 3’ (TBA)

Fans of the ‘System Shock’ series had been waiting for the arrival of ‘System Shock 3’ for what felt like an eternity. That’s because work on the threequel has been pretty rocky since its announcement back in 2015. The game fell into development hell with financial woes and creative differences forming between developer and publisher. But to the surprise of many, this dire project had recently fallen into the lap of Tencent and now seems to be coming along smoothly.

5

‘S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl’ (XBS, PC) (Apr 2022)

Over the years, the popular post-apocalyptic shooter franchise 'S.T.A.L.K.E.R.' has managed to capture the hearts of many around the world. But following the launch of the third entry, 'Call of Pripyat,' it faced many challenges just to remain relevant. The fourth game, 'Heart of Chernobyl', was originally announced for a 2012 release. But its developer GSC suffered tremendous shrinkage that had put the title on ice. Fortunately, a newly revitalized GSC is bringing S2HOC to platforms in 2022.
