A lot of signings and trades take part during the Winter Meetings. Lots of players found new homes via trade or as a free agent, and they will look to help their new teams in any way they can during the upcoming season. Below are some of the moves made during the 2018 Winter Meetings.
Andrew McCutchen- Signs with Phillies
McCutchen is heading back to Pennsylvania, but to the other side of the state. McCutchen signed a three-year, $50 million deal and is expected to play left field for the Phillies. In a 2018 season split between the Giants and Yankees, McCutchen slashed .255/.368/.424 with 20 home runs.
Troy Tulowitzki- Released by Blue Jays
Tulowtizki has been nothing like he was in Colorado.. After missing out on all of last season and part of 2017, the Jays decided to release him, despite there being $38 million owed to him still.
Ivan Nova- Traded to White Sox
The White Sox still aren't contenders, but that didn't stop them from buying. The White Sox acquired Nova from the Pirates in exchange for minor-league pitcher Yordi Rosario and $500,000 of international bonus pool money. Last season, Nova went 9-9 with a 4.19 ERA in 161 innings pitched.
Chris Herrmann- Signs with Athletics
The Athletics have brought in more depth behind the plate, by signing Chris Herrmann to a one-year deal worth $1 million. Herrmann will serve as the backup catcher in Oakland.
Charlie Morton- Signs with Rays
Despite wishing to stay on the West Coast, Morton changed his mind by signing a two-year, $30 million contract with the Rays. With the Astros, last season, Morton went 15-3 with a 3.13 ERA and struck out 201 batters. He only gave up 130 hits in 161 innings pitched.
Lance Lynn- Signs with Rangers
The Rangers made a surprising move by signing Lynn to a three-year deal worth $30 million. Last season, with the Twins and Yankees, Lynn went 10-10 with a 4.77 ERA.
Tanner Roark- Traded to Reds
The Reds and Nationals connected on a trade. The Nationals are trading Roark to the Reds in exchange for the Reds' No. 23 prospect, Tanner Rainey. In 2018, Roark led the league in losses, with 15, but did throw 180 innings.
Jordy Mercer- Signs with Tigers
After spending the past two seasons with the Pirates, Mercer agreed to a one-year deal worth $5.25 million. Mercer will, most likely, be the starting shortstop with the departure of Jose Iglesias.
J.A. Happ- Re-signs with Yankees
After being traded to the Yankees at last year's trade deadline, Happ went 7-0 with a 2.69 ERA. Happ will look to improve those numbers, as he is staying in New York and has signed a two-year, $34 million deal with a vesting option for a third year.
Jeurys Familia- Signs with Mets
After being traded from the Mets to the Athletics during last season, Familia is headed back to Queens, but will no longer be the closer, due to the Mets' recent acquisition of Edwin Diaz. Familia returned on a three-year deal worth $30 million and will give the Mets a nice back end of the bullpen.
Joe Kelly- Signs with Dodgers
After reinventing himself in Boston, Kelly got himself a nice deal, as he agreed to a three-year, $25 million deal with the Dodgers. Kelly will serve as the setup man to All-Star closer Kenley Jansen.
Carlos Santana- Traded to Cleveland
After spending eight seasons in Cleveland, Santana signed with the Phillies, but he finds himself back in Cleveland with the three-team trade that occurred between the Indians, Mariners and Rays. Last season, with the Phillies, Santana slashed .229/.352/.414 with 24 home runs and 86 RBIs.
Jake Bauers- Traded to Cleveland
Along with reuniting with Santana, the Indians got Bauers as part of the three-team trade. In his rookie season in the big leagues, Bauers slashed a poor .201/.316/.384 and hit 11 home runs with 48 RBIs in 96 games.
Edwin Encarnacion- Traded to Mariners
As part of the three-team deal, the Mariners landed slugger Edwin Encarnacion. Last season, he slashed .246/.336/.474 with 32 home runs and 107 RBIs.
Yandy Diaz- Traded to Tampa
The Rays acquired Yandy Diaz in the three-team deal. Across two seasons in the big leagues, Diaz has slashed .283/.361/.366.
Alex Claudio- Traded to Brewers
The Brewers added another arm to their bullpen, as they've acquired Claudio from the Rangers. Claudio will give the Brewers another lefty option besides ace reliever Josh Hader.
