Oklahoma Sooner's star quarterback Baker Mayfield is an early favorite to win the Heisman Trophy next year. However after a run in with police last night that could all be in jeopardy.

Sooner's quarterback arrested on four charges

Baker Mayfield was arrested early Saturday Morning in Fayetteville, Arkansas and charged with disorderly conduct, public intoxication, fleeing, and resisting arrest. When police arrived around 2:30 in the morning the quarterback was intoxicated and yelling obscenities and having difficulty walking down stairs. His clothing was also said to have been covered in food.

When an officer tried to approach Mayfield he sprinted away from the scene and the officer proceeded to chase him down and tackle him. Mayfield resisted arrest by continuously refusing to put his arms behind his back despite the officer repeatedly tellling him to do so. He was eventually handcuffed and taken away to the Washington County Detention Facility. He was booked around 8:21 am local time. His first hearing will be on Monday and that's also when a police report will be made available. He's scheduled to appear in court again on April 7th. The University Of Oklahoma athletic department released this statement, "We are aware of the matter and are learning the details.

We don't have any other information at this time."

Mayfield could face disciplinary action

Even though the University of Oklahoma is still gathering information about the incident, Baker Mayfield could be facing some serious punishment from his school which could include a suspension. This would be devastating news for the redshirt senior who is widely regarded as one of the top returning players in all of college football.

In 2016 Mayfield threw for over 3,700 yards and 36 touchdowns for the second straight year. He is one of the early favorites to take home the Heisman trophy this year if he is able to reproduce those eye-popping numbers this season. Mayfield transferred from Texas Tech in 2014. It is unclear if Oklahoma will take any action against him but this is definitely not the way he wanted this season to start. We should know more about his playing status for the upcoming year as this case unfolds.
