Located in the heart of Europe, Maramures is a land of wooden churches, legendary treasures, breathtaking landscapes and ancient traditions. It is located in the extreme NE of the country, being an isolated area from the Carpathian Mountains. This area of 6304 km has a beauty almost unreal. Although since the late XIV century Maramures is considered a part of Transylvania, it always had a distinct character because it is hidden by mountains and forests of oak and fir. Nevertheless, after the territorial division which took place at the final of World War I, Romania obtained just 1/3 from original Maramures, namely the part which is in the south of the Tisza. 

Maramures is an unique place in the world from many points of view.

It's the land of wood, the place where folk tradition is still preserved, the only place from Europe where people mock death. Also it is filled with picturesque villages, people that proudly wears folk clothes, craftsmen in the art of wood who create true masterpieces. Those who go there in the cold season can fully enjoy the traditions from this area, home cooked meals and hosts' hospitality, Moreover, they can admire astonishing landscapes that leaves anyone breathless. However, in the hot season a number of places and sights will certainly arouse tourists' interest:

  • The Merry Cemetery -  Is a cemetery in the village of Sapanta. It is famous for its colorful tombstones with näive paintings describing, in an original and poetic manner, the persons who are buried there as well as scenes from their lives. The Merry Cemetery became an open-air museum and a national tourist attraction. 
  • Sapanta-Peri Monastery - Having 78 meters, it is the highest wood monastery in the world.
  • Horses' Waterfall - Being in Borsa city, it is visited every year by tourists due to its beauty. 
  • Iezer Lake -  Is laceted in Rodnei Mountains and it is the only lake that has the shape of Romania.
  • Steam locomotive (Mocanita in Romanian) - It travels in the mountain area of Viseu.

Besides these, Maramures has a lot of interesting surroundings which deserve to be discovered and promoted by every person who travels to this piece of heaven.
