It seems Samsung is all geared up to unveil the highly anticipated next-generation Gear S smartwatch next week at the consumer electronics trade show, IFA 2017, in Berlin. The news was confirmed by Samsung Mobile president DJ Koh.

Koh told CNBC that the company will take the wraps off the new Gear watches in Berlin in a week’s time. The executive said that the sensors embedded in the current-generation wearable devices are not competent enough to track and provide health information. He added that the company’s next wearable smartwatch will monitor everything for the user’s health and provide wholesome information.

Although he did not reveal any more details about the device, it is expected that the smartwatch in question is the much awaited Samsung Gear S4. Notably, the tech giant unveiled the Gear S3 smartwatch in August at the IFA event last year. The wearable device began shipping in November. The South Korean smartphone maker is also expected to announce the Gear Fit2 successor, dubbed Gear Fit2 Pro, at the IFA event.

Possible specs and features

Talking about Samsung Gear S4 specs, it is expected that the smartwatch will come with a slew of new health and fitness related features. Samsung has reportedly filed a patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for a special case for charging a smartwatch.

According to the patent, the next Samsung wearable could be charged by just resting it on top of a special case. At this point in time, it remains unclear if the Gear S4 will come with wireless charging support.

Among other specs, the upcoming gear smartwatch is likely to come with a faster processor, which will most likely be the Exynos 7 Dual 7270 chipset, enhanced battery life, digital voice assistant Bixby and a host of health and sports tracking capabilities.

The Samsung Gear S3 successor is rumored to be the first Gear smartwatch to feature the latest Tizen 3.0 operating system.

Gear Fit2 Pro

The Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro will feature a 1.5 inches super AMOLED screen, with 216 x 432 pixel resolution, Tizen operating software, advanced fitness trackers, a heart rate sensor, an accelerometer, a barometer and GPS chip.

The upcoming smart fitness wear is expected to get up to 5ATM (50 meters) water resistance that will allow the device to track swimming workouts. The fitness tracker will be compatible with the Speedo On app for swim tracking and will also support a music playback option.
