After months of speculation, Lenovo finally took the wraps off its Moto G5S and Moto G5S Plus handsets on August 1.

Motorola's strategy

Both smartphones are basically upgraded iterations of the Moto G5 and the Moto G5 Plus smartphones which were unveiled at the recently concluded MWC (Mobile World Congress).

Following in the footsteps of Samsung, Motorola's strategy centers on flooding the marketplace and in line with that, the company has launched 8 smartphones in the past few weeks. The recently launched smartphones comprise Moto Z2 Play, Moto Z2 Force, Moto E4 Plus, Moto E4, Moto C Plus, Moto C, and now, the G5S and its sibling, the G5S Plus.

Price and availability

The "S" in the smartphones' name denote special edition. What actually makes these devices special is a slew of upgrades over their precursors. Both the Moto G5S and the Moto G5S Plus will be up for grabs in many countries this month. The devices will be available in the US this fall, according to a report from Gadgets 360.

While the former will come bearing a starting price tag of EUR 249 (about $295), the later will start from EUR 299, which converts roughly to about $354.

Moto G5S

The phone sports a 5.2-inches Full-HD display. The front panel of the smartphone is occupied by fingerprint scanner and home button.

Under the hood, the Motorola Moto G5S packs a Snapdragon 430 paired with an octa-core CPU.

Aside from that, there is 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage, which is expandable up to 128 GB via a hybrid microSD slot.

It will run on Android 7.1 Nougat. The phone will be backed up by a 3,000 mAh battery, which is relatively larger than the 2,800 mAh battery used in the G5.

Among other improvements, the device will feature a rear-mounted 16MP camera, which retains the single LED flash as well as the f/2.0 aperture.

It's worth noting that video recording will be limited to Full-HD because that's the highest the Snapdragon 430 can go.

There's a 5MP wide-angle front shooter equipped with an f/2.0 lens and an aperture boost. Moreover, there is an LED flash included allowing selfie addicts to take selfies even in the dark. The mobile phone will be available in a couple of color variants, including Fine Gold and Lunar Grey.

Moto G5S Plus

Deemed by GSM Arena as the more capable of the two smartphones, the Moto G5S Plus sports a Full HD resolution display just like the Moto G5 Plus, but with a marginally bigger diagonal of 5.5-inches.

The G5S Plus will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 coupled with an octa-core CPU, which is clocked at 2.0 GHz. Surprisingly, the device didn't get a battery boost and is still backed by a 3,000 mAh battery. In terms of optics, the device has received a radical upgrade in the form of a dual camera setup with a couple of horizontally placed 13MP sensors placed behind f/2.0 lenses.

That facilitates enhanced image processing and enables exciting features such as portrait mode. The device is also capable of shooting 4K videos.

Meanwhile, the front snapper has been upgraded to include an 8MP resolution and brilliant f/2.2 lens. The smartphone comes in Fine Gold and Lunar Grey and is expected to start shipping on August 18. In fact, the Moto G5S Plus is already available for pre-order on Amazon.
