Forget the Tesla roadster or the upcoming BMW EV, the British manufacturer Ariel has one big electric supercar coming on the horizon. It will be stylish, extremely fast and powerful. The company made the big announcement this week.

According to Autoblog, the maker of the iconic supercars Atom and Nomad is working on a new futuristic two-seat electric supercar, which the company plans to reveal later this month. The Ariel P10 will offer 1,180 horsepower and 1,328 lb-ft of torque. This will allows the car to hit from 0-100 mph in just 3.8 seconds, the website reported.

What to expect from the new electric supercar

Unlike its previous cars, the Atom and the Nomad, the new electric sports car will be a closed car. It will be a radical-looking machine, featuring an angular body panel, with scowling headlights and gullwing doors.

The new electric supercar has not been officially named yet, but according to Autoblog, Ariel is referring to it as the Hipercar which the company said stands for high-performance carbon-reduction. The Hipercar will be made available in 2020, in two models.

The first model of the Hipercar will use four small electric motors with one positioned next to each wheel. This model will have a 1,180 horsepower and 1,330 lb-ft torque. This gives the first model a top speed of 160 mph.

On the other hand, the second model will only feature two electric motors and achieves 665 lb-ft of torque and 590 horsepower. The car’s motors will be equipped with either a 56kWh or 42-kWh battery. This electric supercar will also equip with an additional 35-kWh gasoline micro-turbine engine, which will serve as a range extender or backup.

No words on pricing yet, but the British company just revealed its rollout plans. As mentioned earlier by Autoblog, a prototype will be on display at the Low Carbon Vehicle Show in England. The first public reveal of the full car will be in 2019 and then, it will go on sale in 2020.

A close look at Ariel, the British manufacturer

Founded in 2001 and based in Somerset, United Kingdom, Ariel Motor is a low-volume performance motor vehicle manufacturer. The company is one of UK’s smallest automotive companies, with just 19 employees on board. It produces only around 100 cars per year.

The UK-based automaker developed the Ariel Atom, the world’s first road-going exoskeletal car. This extremely light, high-performance car has been built entirely on the tube chassis and its powered by a Honda Civic Type-R engine. In June 2014, the company came out with another new vehicle, the Ariel Ace motorcycle. And in 2015, the company introduced the Honda-powered Nomad at the Autosport International Show event.
