Technology has elevated us to greater heights. Front lining this innovation are Artificial Intelligence or AIs that are believed to carry the hope of humanity. However, this reverie was quickly terminated because of the possibility of the development of killer robots.

That is why leading technology-providing companies from around the world, including Elon Musk, founder of Tesla, averred they were strongly against these deadly robots.

The open letter to the United Nations

116 robotics companies have called the attention of the United Nations Regarding on this serious issue.

These companies came from across Asia, North America, Africa and Europe and they have sent an open letter to warn against the dangerous possibilities these killer AIs may bring.

“We warmly welcome the decision of the United Nations’ Conference of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW) to establish a Group of Governmental Experts (GGE) on Lethal Autonomous Weapon Systems. Many of our researchers and engineers are eager to offer technical advice to your deliberations,” as written in the open letter.

These companies also suggested on the Group of Governmental Experts to exert more effort on finding ways to prevent an advancing arms race. This is in order to protect the civilians from misuse of these technologies and control the effect of these weapons to the people and to the environment.

It was also stated in the last part of the letter that these lethal autonomous weapons can trigger a third revolution in warfare. The development of this artificial intelligence can result in large-scale armed conflicts. In addition, there is also a great risk of misuse of these robots, such as terrorism and acts of war.

Elon Musk’s vision

Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla and SpaceX, is renowned for his brilliant ideas and a sharp mind. As a forerunner in robotics and artificial intelligence technology, his stand on the issue of killer robots is significant.

Musk had already warned the public about the dangers of this technology for years and recently, he has expressed his correspondence regarding on the world ban on killer robots.

He also said that these lethal autonomous weapons are ‘potentially more dangerous than nukes.’

This signifies that third revolution in warfare is far more dangerous than nuclear warfare. Even with the presence of this impending threat, Musk still continues on making developments and earning marks on the field of Science. At present, he is working on linking human brain with computers to create a device intended to provide great benefits to humanity.
