When it comes to the solar system, the moon Titan is pretty special. There are few places in our solar system where there is liquid present, and Titan is such a place. Apart from planet Earth, there is actual liquid on the moon of Saturn. However, the liquid present there is a bit different than that on the planet Earth. On Earth, the liquid is in the form of the water and the chemical compounds present in the water are Hydrogen and Oxygen. However, in the case of Titan, there is a presence of hydrocarbon liquid in form of methane. Recently, Scientists have confirmed that the surface of the Methane Lakes on Titan is very smooth.
What techniques are used by the scientists?
With the help of a radar technique, scientists are now able to get a basic idea of the density of the snow in the poles of the Earth. A similar technique is used in order to figure out the characteristics of the hydrocarbon liquid present on Titan. The very first thing that scientists figured out about the Methane Lake on Titan is that the surface of the lake is very smooth. Though there is a huge difference between that and the liquid present on Earth, there are some similarities as well. The hydrocarbon present on Titan is higher in volume than on Earth, even in fossilized form. There is a significant difference in temperature as well.
What are the differences between the Earth and what have they found?
However, it is clearly acceptable, as Titian is so far away from the Sun. Apart from the methane surface of Titan, there are a few other differences when compared with the Earth as well. There is a thick layer of Nitrogen present on Titan which makes it unique within the context of the solar system.
Scientists have also assumed that there is a chance of hydrocarbon rain in the Titian.
There is also the possibility of a high volume of hydrocarbon liquid present on Titan. Along with the basic knowledge of the methane lake present on Titian, scientists also have gathered knowledge about the waves present in those lakes. Primarily it can be assumed that the waves in the methane lake occur due to wind present on Titan.
From the details we have right now, it can be said that the height of the waves are around five to 11 millimeters high and at the same time, the width of those waves are around 50-110 millimeters long. There is a bit of slope present in the waves as well and it is around 2.2 degrees. Hopefully, with the help of latest technology, we will get to know more about these lakes in the near future.
