The countdown has started as AMD is set to release the much-awaited Threadripper X399 high-end desktop (HEDT) processor on August 10. Two high-end processors based on AMD Ryzen architecture will become available in AMD-partner retails stores: the 16-core/32-thread 1950X, and the 12-core/24-thread 1920X.
Ryzen Threadripper 1950X CPU
AMD’s flagship chip of the Threadripper X399 family of processors is the Ryzen 1950X.
As mentioned earlier, this processor features 16-core and 32-thread; the highest processing among the Ryzen family. The base clock speed is at 3.4GHz, while it reaches up to a 4.0GHz boost clock using the 180W TDP. Both the clock speed and TDP using the eXtended Frequency Range (XFR) technology has yet to be determined.
Ryzen Threadripper 1950X has 32MB of L3 cache and 8MB of L2 cache for a total of 40MB shared cache. A total of 64 PCIe lanes are available; 60 of which are allotted for graphics usage and PCIe NVMe. But more importantly, AMD’s flagship HEDT chip costs only $999. This is $700 less than its competitor from the Intel Core I9 family, the 16-core/32-thread 7960X processor.
Ryzen Threadripper 1920X CPU
The second most powerful processor based on Ryzen architecture is the Threadripper 1920X which features 12-cores and 24-threads. The chip has a base clock speed of 3.5GHz and reaches up to 4.0GHz boost speed running on 180W TDP. Like the 1950X, the clock speed and TDP using XFR technology has yet to be determined.
Ryzen Threadripper 1950X has the same 32MB of L3 cache but only 6MB of L2 cache for a total of 38MB cache. This chip also carries a total of 64 PCIe lanes. This AMD 12-core/24-thread processor will be available on the market for only $799; a full $400 cheaper than its direct competition from Intel which is the Core i9-7920X. Both the AMD and Intel chips will be out this August.
The Ryzen Threadripper package
Tech analysts and enthusiasts are still in awe after AMD CEO Lisa Su showed the official packaging of the Ryzen Threadripper. Some call it extraordinary, some call it unique, but most believe that it is sexy.
What’s more is that these high-end AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors target the X399 HEDT platform; Intel’s Core i9 is set for the X299 HEDT platform only. Though Intel will still come up with an 18-core/36-thread Core i9-7980XE, the 16-core AMD processor is believed to be the top choice for HEDT platforms considering its cheaper price. The 16-core/32-thread 1950X and the 12-core/24-thread 1920X AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors will be on the market on August 10.
