Three brands of hummus with pine nut topping have been recalled from stores after fears of a potential Listeria infection. These products were from the House of Thaller brand. All the three products namely, Lantana, Marketside, and Fresh Foods Market come in 10 ounce packages.

Hummus recall after fear of Listeria contamination

The recall order came after HVF Inc., the supplier for all the pine nuts in these products, reported to House of Thaller the potential contamination of the nuts with Listeria monocytogenes. The recall order includes both the United States and Canada.

The hummuses were sold between April 18 and June 13 in the U.S. and April 20 onward in Canada.

The full list of the “USE BY” codes which have been recalled from the stores are available on the Food and Drug Administration’s website. Customers who may have bought the product within the last month or so are strongly urged to refrain from consuming the products. Instead they can head over to FDA’s website to ensure that their product does not match the codes in the list of recalled items.

House of Thaller assured its customers that no other products from the company had been contaminated with the Listeria monocytogenes. There have also been no known cases where an individual has fallen sick after consumption of the said hummus.

However, if someone has indeed bought one of the recalled products, it is better to dispose of the same.

Listeria symptoms and treatment

People who consume food infected with the Listeria monocytogenes can become afflicted with the disease known as listeriosis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that the disease infects around 1600 people in the U.S.

annually and among them around 260 die from the infections ranging from the disease.

The symptoms can vary from one individual to the next. Some may experience headaches, stiff necks, and fever, while others may experience loss of balance, confusion and muscle aches. Young children and those with a compromised immune system are at a greater risk from the disease.

However, pregnant women face the greatest risk from Listeria infection. The infection may cause miscarriages, still births, and even early delivery in pregnant women and thus must be taken very seriously in such cases.
