Good news is on its way for owners of unlocked LG G5 running on AT&T. After a wait of six months, the unlocked version of the smartphone in the United States will finally be upgraded to from Android Marshmallow to Android 7.0 Nougat. The same OTA software update reached the international unlocked variants first, whereas those on AT&T in the U.S. had to wait for six months.

AT&T finally pushes out the update

AT&T is the last major U.S. operator to push out the Android N update for its unlocked LG G5 carrying the version number RS988. Sprint released the same update for its unlocked version of the handset in November 2016, followed shortly by Verizon and T-Mobile.

AT&T took its own sweet time and released the update in February, which again took some months to finally come in for the unlocked variant.

LG G5 gets Android Nougat

AT&T has not published a changelog for LG G5’s Android Nougat update on its support page. However, the OTA update will bring Google’s April Security patch along with other custom Nougat changes. Furthermore, the software version number of the smartphone will change from RS988 to RS98821a. Given the fact that Android 7.1.1 Nougat update has been released and the May Security patch is also available, it is a disappointment to see AT&T provide the older Android version and a month-old security patch for the unlocked LG G5.

Things to remember

The download file size weighs a massive 1.3 GB and, so, it is advisable to keep ample free space for smooth download and installation. One must also remember to connect their unlocked LG G5 to a strong Wi-Fi connection for hindrance installation. It is also advisable to backup important data and files on a SD card, a PC, or a cloud storage system, prior to upgrading the software.

Also, make sure that the device has sufficient battery charge at the time of installation.

When will you get the update?

The OTA update is rolling out in phases and will reach all LG G5 smartphones automatically within a few days. However, if you do not receive the alert within a considerable amount of time, you can download and install it manually as well.

To seamlessly download and install the Android 7.0 Nougat software update manually, follow the steps below.

First, go to the Settings menu from the notification shade and select the General option. From her, click on About Phone and select Update Center and then Software Update. If there is an update available it will come up on the screen. The user will then have to tap on Update Now to download and install the software. The LG G5 will reboot itself automatically to install the update in the system and it may take a few minutes to complete the process.
