After seeing their children in various compromising poses throughout the social networks, about 20% - 25% of parents are admitting the fact that their relationship with their children is being affected. A Kaspersky Lab study shows that this effect is due to the distance that is created between them (parents - children), as the means of video/audio communication is continuously growing.
Social platforms are showing the true colors of a person
Parents that have seen their children on social platforms are admitting that their relationships are being negatively affected, however, only half of them seem to be disturbed by their children's online behavior. Social networks are also affecting marriages as well. Some people are saying that their relationship with their life partner was compromised after discovering their true nature -- displayed on social networks.
People should be careful about what they’re posting
As people tend to upload pictures of themselves or with friends under the influence of alcohol or dressed outrageously, it is obvious that social networks can affect the offline relationships of users.
We would expect parents not to approve of their child's activity on these networks, however, the reality is different. Family, friends, and colleagues are changing as people are not speaking face to face anymore. Kaspersky’s study shows that one third of users are communicating less with their parents, children, partners, and friends because they can see and communicate with them via social networks.
A race for popularity
Social networks are not only helping people communicate through the internet. It is also affecting them as people, as many users are continuously comparing themselves with others. The hype for “likes” and popularity is pushing people to reveal themselves and their private information on social platforms, not only putting themselves in danger, but their close friends and loved ones as well.
For those who are considering deleting their virtual persona, it's a very hard decision, as they would lose digital memories, including pictures and interactions. In order to protect themselves better, people ought to be cautious and better informed about the things they provide online.
