The Nebraska football team is one of the latest schools from the FBS level to offer defensive end Alex Lemon. Lemon isn't someone who has been sought after a whole lot in the 2020 recruiting cycle, but it appears he's gaining some serious momentum. While it's not clear why this particular late bloomer is indeed blooming rather late, but it could be the fact that he just pledged himself to Arizona State.

Nebraska football looking to grab a Sun Devil commit

It's been a long road to the Power 5 for Lemon. Out of high school, the California native had been looking like he was headed to San Diego State.

When he wasn't able to qualify academically, he decided it was time to go the JUCO route. That's how he ended up at San Diego Mesa College. Now that he is ready to go and join the ranks of the FBS, he's committed to Arizona State.

That commitment didn't come all that long ago, but it appears other schools are not being shied away by his pledge to the Power 5 school. Lemon received an offer from the Huskers just a few days after he announced his commitment.

It's not exactly a mystery why the team is going after the defensive end. There might not be a bigger need on the Huskers roster than a rush end.

That was something they were clearly missing the last few years. The coaching staff did its best to fill the hole in the roster during the 2019 recruiting class, but they weren't able to handle the position the way they wanted entirely.

Now they have turned their attention to a Junior College player that is just starting to get more attention.

The Huskers were just the third FBS offer for Alex Lemon a few days ago, but it appears things are heating up. Just a day after the Huskers came calling, the San Diego State Aztecs made him an offer for the second time during his football career.

Nebraska football target's career taking off

One of the reasons that Alex Lemon has been a kind of under-the-radar prospect is that he wasn't really someone who focused much on football before high school.

That has led to him being kind of a late bloomer. After he committed to the Sun Devils, he talked to Sun Devil Source about how small he was when his career first got started.

Lemon says he hit a growth spurt between his freshman and sophomore year. His first year in the game, he was just 5-11 and 190 pounds. "My sophomore year I tried to play junior varsity and my varsity coach didn't let me," Lemon told the publication. "I've loved the sport ever since then."

If there is a hiccup in the plans of the Nebraska football team to steal him away from Arizona State, it's that the coach for the Sun Devils that has been recruiting Alex Lemon has been doing so for some time. The Husker coaching staff has its work cut out for it when it comes to establishing that kind of relationship. The bright side is they are exceptional at doing that sort of thing.
