Nebraska football fans know Zac Taylor quite well. The former Cornhuskers quarterback won the 2007 Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year Award, after guiding the team to a 9-3 record. That season saw him pass for nearly 2,800 yards and 24 touchdowns, as the team went to the Big 12 Championship Game against Oklahoma. While Taylor was undrafted by the NFL, he still found his way into the league in a different capacity. As a quarterback coach, Taylor now has a shot at becoming a head coach for a team that happens to need one.

Zac Taylor up for head coach job

According to the Omaha website, the former Nebraska Cornhuskers star is among the top candidates for the now open Cleveland Browns head coaching job. It was reported by multiple media outlets, including ESPN, that the Browns fired their coach, Hue Jackson, after the rough start the team has had. Not only did they fire Jackson, but also offensive coordinator Todd Haley. Nebraska, meanwhile, is making inroads to a highly rated safety.

Cleveland is just 2-5 for the season, so far, which is better than previous campaigns, in terms of total wins.

The team won just one game over their past two seasons, so they've already doubled that output this season. However, they are also trying to build toward the future, with younger players and a new coaching staff. The moves to fire Jackson and Haley on Monday (October 29) weren't all that shocking based on how things have been going.

Taylor's coaching experience is extensive

That could include Zac Taylor, who has plenty of experience under his belt. While Taylor went undrafted in the 2007 NFL Draft, he was signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Unfortunately, they cut him during the preseason. He tried for a stint in the CFL, but that didn't pan out either.

Ultimately, coaching was Taylor's calling and he became an assistant quarterbacks coach with the Miami Dolphins in 2012.

Taylor moved to the head quarterback coach position and offensive coordinator with the Dolphins by 2015. He'd go on to move into that same position with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2016. That lasted just a season, and he's now with the only undefeated team in the league. After beginning as a wide receivers coach, Zac Taylor has been the quarterback coach for the Los Angeles Rams since the start of this season. That means he's working with Jared Goff, who has the offense looking like a well-oiled machine. The Rams are 8-0 after another win this past Sunday (October 28).

Taylor is odds-on-favorite to land job

There are currently odds listed for who will take over as the Cleveland Browns' new head coach. Reportedly, Bet Online is offering their customers the ability to bet on several people for the vacancy. Zac Taylor is the odds-on-favorite, with Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley right behind him. Other candidates include L.A. Rams head coach Sean McVay and New Orleans Saints assistant head coach Dan Campbell.

Most diehard Nebraska football fans would love to see their former star quarterback take over the reigns for an NFL coaching job. Even as the school prepares for a game against Ohio State. He seems more than qualified, based on his resume over the years.
