The odds to win the 2018 World Series have once again shifted following the July 31 MLB trade deadline, and some of the preseason favorites are heading in the wrong direction. While MLB experts and fans will argue which team made the best acquisitions over the past week, Las Vegas sportsbooks are chiming in as well.
Dodger Blue rising
According to Sports Betting Dime, the Los Angeles Dodgers were the biggest climbers in the latest World Series odds standings, followed by the Atlanta Braves and Milwaukee Brewers.
The Dodgers raised a lot of eyebrows when they acquired Manny Machado from the Baltimore Orioles for five prospects.
While that move alone had oddsmakers making a change, adding veteran second baseman Brian Dozier from the Twins for Logan Forsythe and a pair of minor leaguers only strengthened the Dodgers odds. Dozier, 31, is a very solid player and will give the Dodgers a much-needed boost from the second base position. After adding Dozier, LA made a last-second deal for right-handed reliever John Axford from the Toronto Blue Jays.
L.A. has an incredibly high payroll, but with these recent moves, the Dodgers have jumped up from an average of 7-1 odds to +450 or 4.5-1. That jump puts the Dodgers as the No. 2 team favored to win the Fall Classic, only behind the Houston Astros at 4-1.
Brewers, Braves no longer longshots
Just a little over three months ago not many MLB experts believed that the Atlanta Braves or Milwaukee Brewers would head into August as one of the top ten favorites to be crowned champions of the baseball world - but they are.
These two teams look a lot different then they did one year ago, and right now they both are playing at a high level.
Ironically, both the Braves and Brewers are in second place in their respective divisions, just percentage points behind the Phillies and Cubs.
Atlanta and Milwaukee both began the 2018 MLB season with odds averaging right around 60-1, or +6000. Now both squads are near the 20-1 or +2000 mark. That is an incredible jump considering we are about to enter the final 60-day stretch run of the season.
Two other teams that are quickly getting respect at the Vegas window are the Seattle Mariners and Oakland A's.
The Mariners are currently listed at +2500, which is up from +4000 in April, while the A's are still a lofty +8000, but that is a huge jump from their 50-1 odds on Opening Day. Below are the top ten favorites to win the 2018 World Series, according to Bovada.
- Houston Astros +400
- Los Angeles Dodgers +450
- Boston Red Sox +500
- New York Yankees +550
- Chicago Cubs +750
- Cleveland Indians +1200
- Philadelphia Phillies +1500
- Arizona Diamondbacks +1700
- Atlanta Braves +2000
- Milwaukee Brewers +2150
