A slow market for Free Agent starting pitchers is finally starting to gain some traction. There were Plenty of starting pitchers that agreed to new deals just on Thursday and Friday.
The major splash for free agent starting pitchers came last Saturday when the Cubs agreed to a six-year deal worth $126 million with Yu Darvish. There are still some top-notch starters left on the free agent market as well such as Jake Arrieta, Lance Lynn, and Alex Cobb.
Here are five starters who have signed on with new teams over the past two days. Not included are players such as Jorge De La Rosa (minor league deal with the Diamondbacks) and Edinson Volquez (two-year minor league deal with the Rangers, won't pitch in 2018 due to injury).
Andrew Cashner, Baltimore Orioles
The Orioles who have remained quiet in free agency signed their first player to a major league deal this offseason when they agreed to a two-year/$16 million deal with the right-handed starter Cashner. With the Rangers last season, the 31-year-old finished ninth in the American League with a 3.40 ERA.
In 28 starts, he pitched 166.2 innings, had an 11-11 record, struck out 86 hitters, and finished with a 1.32 WHIP.
Jaime Garcia, Toronto Blue Jays
After spending the 2017 season with the Braves, Twins (only for one start), and Yankees, the left-handed throwing Garcia will be going to the Blue Jays on a one-year pact worth $10 million. He started 27 games combined for the three teams last season going 5-10 with a 4.41 ERA. He struck out 129 in 157 innings and had a 1.41 WHIP. He will turn 32 on July 8.
Wade Miley, Milwaukee Brewers
After experiencing some struggles in each of the last two seasons with Baltimore, Miley has agreed to a minor league deal with the Brewers. The 31-year-old left-hander made 32 starts with the Orioles in 2017.
He went 8-15 with a 5.61 ERA, 1.73 WHIP, and 142 strikeouts in 157.1 innings.
Anibal Sanchez, Minnesota Twins
Turning 34 on February 27, Sanchez will join the Twins in 2018 on a one-year deal worth $2.5 million. He led the American League in ERA with the Tigers in 2013 but hasn't pitched very well in each of the last three years. Last season with Detroit, the right-hander pitched in 28 games (17 starts) and went 3-7 with a 6.41 ERA. He finished with 104 strikeouts in 105.1 innings and a 1.59 WHIP.
Jason Vargas, New York Mets
After tying for the Major League lead with 18 wins as a member of the Royals in 2017, Vargas will join the Mets after agreeing to a two-year deal worth $16 million. The 35-year-old southpaw made 32 starts last year with Kansas City and ended with a 4.16 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, and 134 strikeouts in 179.2 innings.
