After spending most of Tuesday believing that the Florida Gators were going to hire Chip Kelly, Nebraska football fans might have something to be worried about again. The hiring of Kelly meant that Florida wasn’t going to be hiring the man most Husker fans want. Scott Frost appeared to be the Cornhuskers’ to get if Kelly really was taking the opening at Florida.

On Wednesday morning, the concerns that Frost might go to Florida were back thanks to former Gators’ head coach Steve Spurrier. According to SEC Country, Spurrier made an appearance on a local radio show.

During his interview he hinted that he knew who his old school was going to hire.

Nebraska football fans have reason to be nervous again?

Ever since Jim McElwain was fired, Husker fans have been nervous the Florida Gators would be able to steal Frost out from under them. This is one of the reasons there has been quite a few fans who have wanted Athletic Director Bill Moos to fire Mike Riley sooner, rather than later.

With the Chip Kelly rumors flying fast and furiously earlier this week, they thought those concerns were all for naught. Spurrier’s comments add another twist to what has been quite the college football soap opera in this late part of the season. The “Ole Ball Coach” went on the Buddy Martin show and told his audience that Florida will have a new coach in the next 3-4 weeks.

“The coach is with his team now. The coach we’re going to hire is probably, I would almost 100 percent say is coaching his team today, this weekend, and through the end of the season, and maybe through the bowl game.”

Scott Frost still not a shoo-in for Florida

While Husker fans might have some right to worry, the fact of the matter is that Spurrier didn’t spill all the beans.

There are plenty of good coaches that are still coaching their respective teams and will be taking those teams to a bowl game.

When talking about the biggest coaching candidates in the country, Matt Campbell of Iowa State and Dan Mullens of Mississippi State are both coaching teams headed for a bowl game. The Gators have especially shown at least some interest in Mullens, whose Bulldogs almost pulled off a massive upset against the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Florida might prefer Mullens over Scott Frost because he’s got a history in the SEC. It would make the Gators quite happy to steal a prized coach from a conference foe. It’s a safe bet that Nebraska football fans would be plenty happy to see that happen.
