There were excellent Fantasy Football performances who were likely unowned, or at least not started in almost every league. We'll take a look at one quarterback, two running backs, two wide receivers, and one tight end who had surprising performances.
The Week 1 team consisted of Alex Smith at quarterback, Tarik Cohen and Mike Tolbert at running back, Kenny Golladay and Nelson Agholar at wide receiver, and Jesse James at tight end.
Quarterback
Trevor Siemian, Broncos
Week 2 stats: 231 passing yards, 4 passing TD, 1 INT, 14 rushing yards
Siemian had a solid Week 1 performance where he threw for two touchdowns and rushed for one more. He wasn't fantasy relevant all of last season, though, so fantasy players weren't rushing to pick him up. He had one game with four touchdowns last season, but also had four games without a touchdown where he also threw an interception.
Running Back
Jalen Richard, Raiders
Week 2 stats: 58 rushing yards, 1 rushing TD, 2 receptions, 51 receiving yards
As was the case last year, Richard split time with fellow running back DeAndre Washington in Week 1 behind the starter (this year Marshawn Lynch, last year Latavius Murray).
Richard only got six carries in Week 2, but one of those was a 52-yard scamper into the end zone. His 109 total yards is nearly four times as many as the 28 he finished with in the season opener.
Chris Thompson, Redskins
Week 2 stats: 77 rushing yards, 2 rushing TD's, 3 receptions, 29 receiving yards
Thompson was owned in some leagues heading into Week 2, but was left on the bench in most of them. Week 1 did see him score a receiving touchdown, but he only had three carries for four yards. Once again he received just three carries in Week 2, but he made the most of them by scoring on 61 and 7-yard runs.
Wide Receiver
Jermaine Kearse, Jets
Week 2 stats: 4 receptions, 64 receiving yards, 2 receiving touchdowns
Kearse, who was acquired by the Jets in the Sheldon Richardson trade, was surprisingly active in his first Jets action as he caught seven passes for 59 yards in Week 1.
He still was seen by very few as someone who should be added in fantasy, especially on what surely looks like an atrocious Jets offense. They were blown out 45-20 by the Raiders, but both touchdowns by New York were hauled in by Kearse. He had only one touchdown reception all of last season for the Seahawks.
Brandon Coleman, Saints
Week 2 stats: 4 receptions, 82 receiving yards, 1 receiving touchdown
Now in his third season, Coleman's first two seasons saw him catch just 56 passes for five scores. Week 1, he caught only two passes for 13 yards. His 82 receiving yards in Week 2 represent a new career-high, and his 42-yard reception in the second quarter also is the longest of his career.
Tight End
Benjamin Watson, Ravens
Week 2 stats: 8 receptions, 91 receiving yards
Watson missed the entire 2016 season due to injury, and was targeted only once with no catches in the Ravens' Week 1 game. Week 2 was an entirely different story for the 36-year-old who finished with eight catches for 91 yards in the Ravens' 24-10 victory over the Cleveland Browns.
