There is still a month left in the regular season, which means that New York Mets fans have another month of suffering. The Mets have had a crazy amount of injuries, which is why they are 57-73 and 21.5 games out of first place. The Mets were hit with another injury when Yoenis Cespedes was declared out for the rest of the year. For those of you who haven't kept up with the Mets, this is how bad their year has gone.
Cespedes joins the crowd
Cespedes is out for the season with a hamstring strain. The timeline for recovery is about six weeks. Cespedes only played in 81 games this season due to injuries. The Mets are out of playoff contention, so the team decided to shut him down the rest of the year. Cespedes is set to become a free agent at the end of the season, and he is 31 years old.
The tale of the season
The one-time strong rotation is in shambles. Listen to these injury reports. Matt Harvey is expected to make a start on Friday but has missed significant time due to a shoulder injury. Noah Syndergaard is on a throwing program with a lat muscle.
Steven Matz is on the 10-day DL, while ZacK Wheeler is out for the year with a stress reaction in his arm.
Position player wise, David Wright is coming back from neck surgery but suffered a setback. The 34-year old captain last played a major league game in May of 2016. It's unknown if he has played his last game in the majors, but Mets fans are skeptical that he will be back with the team at all. Michael Conforto, the team's only All Star this season, is also gone for the year after separating his shoulder while swinging.
The rest of the Mets
Think about this: the Mets starting outfield from a month ago is completely gone. The Mets could not find any takers at the trade deadline, so they had to settle for making deals with revocable waivers.
While Conforto is gone with an injury, Curtis Granderson was claimed by the Dodgers, while Jay Bruce is playing for the Cleveland Indians now. At this point, the only player the casual baseball fan might know on this team is Jacob DeGrom.
Moving forward, the Mets have some light at the end of the tunnel. Harvey, Syndergaard, DeGrom, Wheeler, and Matz will all be back next season. However, the Mets do not have a lot of firepower in their offense, and this offseason is not going to be a strong one to go out and buy power. The 2018 free agent class will be loaded, but by then the team will have to make some decisions on money because their starters will be wanting a raise in the future.
