As the new NFL season is about to commence one month from now, the Dolphins have not decided who will take over on the spot of injured starting QB Ryan Tannehill. Two names were mentioned as a potential target for them, Colin Kaepernick and Jay Cutler.
The Miami Dolphins had a great showing last season, as they were able to enter the playoffs with a 10-6 win-loss record.
However, they were booted out by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the wild card game and failed to advance to the next round. This coming season, the Dolphins are looking to duplicate or even surpass what they have accomplished the previous season but recent event might foil it.
Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill out, Colin Kaepernick in
The Miami Dolphins will be missing the services of its starting quarterback after Ryan Tannehill suffers a knee injury during practice Thursday. Words are now spreading that Tannehill will need a season-ending surgery and likely will be out indefinitely. Last season, Tannehill has thrown 2,995 yards for 19 touchdowns with a 93.5 percent passer rating and has been steady in running the Dolphins offense.
With Ryan Tannehill out, the Dolphins are considering Colin Kaepernick as the possible replacement, according to ESPN. Kaepernick, who became a free agent after opting out of his contract with the San Francisco 49ers last March, has thrown 2,241 yards for 16 touchdowns with only four interceptions last season.
He also brought the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl only in his sophomore year that makes him a viable substitute for Tannehill. Some believed that Kaepernick may perhaps a perfect fit for the Dolphins who are accustomed to quarterbacks with a non-conventional skill set. However, other say that there is a better option than the 29-year old QB.
Jay Cutler over Colin Kaepernick
Earlier reports had leaked out that the Miami Dolphins and Cutler's representative have talked about a possible contract.
And according to CBSSports, there are reasons why Jay Cutler makes more sense than Colin Kaepernick for the Dolphins. First, Dolphins head coach Adam Gase already had a working relationship with Cutler during their days at the Chicago Bears in 2015.
With that, there will be no major adjustment for Cutler with Gase's offensive pattern. Moreover, Kaepernick's obvious support for former Cuban dictator Fidel Castro gets a negative impression for Miami residents, where most of the Cuban exiles reside after leaving their country.
