At the upcoming WWE "Battleground" 2017 PPV in Philadelphia, Randy Orton and Jinder Mahal will meet once again. Orton has been unable to regain the championship from Mahal in several tries, with The Singh Brothers usually getting themselves involved. This time around, the two competitors square off inside a Punjabi Prison Match for the WWE Championship. Here's the latest look at how this all came about for the pay-per-view, as well as predicted winner based on the latest WWE "Battleground" 2017 match odds.
Match preview
Jinder Mahal originally captured the WWE Championship in a shocking win over Randy Orton at WWE's "Backlash" this past May.
He's held the title since then for his first-ever reign. Orton got a chance to win the title back at "Money in the Bank," but due to The Singh Brothers going after his father, "Cowboy" Bob Orton, at ringside, Orton came up short. He demanded another title shot due to the circumstances.
"SmackDown Live" Commissioner Shane McMahon made a decision that Orton could have another match at WWE "Battleground" PPV. However, the current champion was allowed to choose the stipulation for it. Mahal decided to make it a Punjabi Match. The structure has been featured twice before, with one of the more recent matches pitting "The Animal" Batista against The Great Khali.
This will be Randy Orton and Jinder Mahal's first times fighting in a match of this type.
One has to think the odds favor Randy because he's been involved in many more matches like this involving structures. They include steel cage, Hell in a Cell, and of course, the Elimination Chamber. Can he capture a win inside the prison?
Predicted winner
For several weeks, the betting odds were listed for the Randy Orton vs.
Jinder Mahal matchup. For the most part, the current champion was the favorite to win once again. However, WWE Leaks reported as of Saturday, that "The Viper" had moved into the role of favorite.
It was reported that Orton was at 2 to 1 on the odds and moved to a 2 to 5 favorite at the Paddy Power Irish sports book. Jinder Mahal changed from a 7 to 4 favorite to a 1 to 3 underdog.
There have been those rumors going around that Baron Corbin will make his big "Money in the Bank" briefcase cash-in after Orton wins the Punjabi Prison match. It seems to give him an ideal environment for an attack with Orton unable to escape the structure. Will this be the case on Sunday, though?
WWE fans, will Randy Orton win the WWE Championship on Sunday? If he does, will Baron Corbin cash in his "MITB" briefcase on him to take the title away?
