The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) held a fight card in Las Vegas, Nevada, last night that drew a response from the organization's biggest star, Conor McGregor.
The Ufc Lightweight Champion was watching the Ultimate Fighter Season 25 Finale's main event fight between Justin Gaethje and Michael Johnson when he took to social media to post a reaction.
Conor's Tweet
"That was a good contest.
Two fighters, fighting," McGregor tweeted. The champion's response was in reaction a great fight put on by the former World Series of Fighting lightweight champion in Gaethje and Johnson who previously won a season of the hit reality television series 'The Ultimate Fighter.'
Gaethje and Johnson stood toe-to-toe and exchanged blows with one another, putting on a memorable and highly entertaining fight at 155-pounds. Gaethje pummeled Johnson with a series of punches and knees that resulted in him collapsing to the canvas and referee John McCarthy stepping into a put a halt to the action at 4:48 in the second round.
It was Gaethje's first fight in the UFC, an impressive one at that. Johnson was the number five-ranked UFC lightweight going into the contest. It will be interesting to see where Gaethje lands in the rankings on Tuesday when they come out.
McGregor's reaction came not only because the fight was extremely entertaining, but also because he could potentially be fighting one of the two competitors down the line. McGregor won the lightweight title in November 2016, defeating then champion Eddie Alvarez at Madison Square Garden. Johnson also fought on that UFC 205 card last year. He was submitted by Khabib Nurmagomedov in the second round.
Biggest Fight in History
The champion is currently scheduled to compete in a boxing match with undefeated legend of the sport, Floyd Mayweather Jr.
The fight between the best in boxing and arguably one of the best in mixed martial arts is expected to take in more money than any other boxing event in history. The fight will go down August 26 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Prices for the scheduled pay-per-view bout have not yet been released but are expected to be north of $100.
It is not known for certain if McGregor will return to the UFC after the Mayweather fight goes down, although UFC President Dana White says he will. Should Gaethje pick up another win, he may eventually earn a shot against McGregor for his title but that fight would not happen until at least December 2017 or early 2018.
