For months there had been rumors of a possible Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather Fight. While many sports fans thought it was merely a war of words and a "who can beat who" trash talking contest, the fight has actually been put together. Now the two superstars from the worlds of mixed martial arts and boxing will battle one another inside the boxing ring. Here's the latest information on when the McGregor vs. Mayweather fight date will take place, as well as some of the latest odds for the fight.
Matchup & fight odds
The legend of the boxing ring, Floyd Mayweather Jr., comes into this matchup unbeaten sporting a record of 49-0 with 26 knockouts on his resume.
The 40-year-old walked away from his sport of choice, having announced retirement back in 2015 when he left the welterweight and super welterweight titles vacant. However, a return to the sport he loves is now going to happen, as he and UFC star Conor McGregor will go face-to-face.
Just like Mayweather, McGregor is known for his flamboyant style and is outspoken. The Irish fighting star held two championships within the UFC at one time and is currently the UFC Lightweight Champion and previously held the UFC Featherweight Championship. His last four pay-per-views have seen staggering buy rates that each topped at least 1.2 million, with his second fight against Nate Diaz in August of 2016 hitting 1,650,000 buys.
That will bring major money when he and Mayweather meet up.
As Heavy recently reported, Conor McGregor was once priced at +950 back in November of last year, before this fight had been made official. Since then, he's had backers and is now a +400 underdog to win. Mayweather was once at -2250 and is now at -600 as the favorite.
These prices could continue to shift as the fight draws closer in the coming weeks.
With McGregor having never put on a pair of boxing gloves it could make this fight a disadvantage. He's entering the ring in Floyd's sport of choice in exchange for what should be a hefty payday. Risk takers who back Conor could find themselves also cashing in should the flamboyant fighter shock the world by handing Mayweather a first-ever career defeat against someone outside of his sport.
When is the big fight?
The UFC star and boxing champion will get inside the ring on August 26th at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. This will be a first of its kind matchup pitting two stars from different sports worlds against one another in the boxing ring.
