Grass season is on the way and that means Roger Federer is back! He lost his first match on the grass court two weeks ago in Stuttgart, when Tommy Haas defeated him in three sets. But in Halle he was unstoppable.
Federer celebrates his ninth title in Halle, 92nd title overall
Roger Federer beat the youngster Alexander Zverev 6-1, 6-3 in the ATP Halle final after just 54 minutes of play.
It was a dominant performance by Federer and a great introduction to the Wimbledon, the biggest tennis tournament. Federer was serving brilliantly the entire week and that was also the case in Sunday's final. He won 92 percent of the points played on his first serve and 50 percent of the points played on Zverev's serve overall. Federer saved the only break point in the match, while he converted four of eight break points on Zverev's serve. This was his ninth title in Halle and his 92nd title overall.
Meanwhile, Feliciano Lopez won the biggest title of his career after beating Marin Cilic 4-6 7-6 7-6 in the ATP Queens final.
Lopez is playing some great tennis at the moment and he really enjoys to play on the grass. He defeated Stan Wawrinka, Jeremy Chardy, Thomas Berdych, Grigor Dimitrov and Marin Cilic on his way to the title while saving two match points. That was a great winning streak for Feliciano Lopez and don't forget the fact he is a 35-year-old.
Kvitova wins Birmingham
Petra Kvitova returned to the tennis court a month ago, after she suffered a stabbing injury in December. She defeated a talented Australian player Ashleigh Barty 4-6 6-3 6-2 in the WTA Birmingham final to claim her first title since the incident. This is a great response by Kvitova and she is certainly one of the favorites to win Wimbledon this season.
However, Kvitova pulled out of the tournament in Eastbourne this week because of an abdominal injury, but she is probably just looking for a little rest before the most important tournament of the year.
Anastasia Sevastova beat Julia Goerges in three sets in the WTA Mallorca final to win her second title of the career and the first one in seven years. Sevastova won four of her five matches in Mallorca after three sets and she showed some great consistency in that deciding set.
The next tournaments
There are several tournaments on the schedule this week, including the qualifying phase of Wimbledon. The ATP tournament will be held in Antalya, Turkey, while the WTA tournament is set to play in Eastbourne, England.
