War Machine brutally attacked Christy Mack
On August 8, 2014, in the middle of the night, War Machine broke into Christy Mack's Las Vegas home. The pair had been on a break and Koppenhaver claimed at the time that he had come back to Christy's house to talk to her and try to fix their relationship. He also claimed that he was there to propose.
When War Machine snuck into Christy's bedroom, he found the former adult film star in bed with another man.
It turns out that it was just a friend named Corey Thomas, who had been over the night before because he was helping Christy with a tattoo convention the following day.
When War Machine came in the bedroom where Christy and Corey were sleeping, He reportedly flipped on the light and then started punching Thomas repeatedly before biting his face and then putting him in a headlock.
After about 10 minutes of being beaten by an MMA fighter, War Machine let Corey Thomas go but told him not to call the police so Christy Mack's friend did just that. He left and he did not alert police as to what was going on at Mack's home.
After Corey Thomas left, War Machine turned on Christy Mack and started beating her too.
Then it was reported that he beat Christy so severely that she lost consciousness. She was reportedly raped by her ex-boyfriend who hit and kicked her so many times that she had multiple broken teeth, fractures to the bones in her face, a lacerated liver, a hip bruise so deep that she couldn't walk among various other injuries.
War Machine even used a knife from the kitchen to cut off Christy's long black mohawk. It was only when he went back to the kitchen to retrieve another knife that Christy escaped out a back door and ran to a neighbor's house for help.
The sentencing
Koppenhaver faced 34 felony and misdemeanor counts for his brutal assault on Christy Mack. His charges ranged from assault to rape to attempted murder.
It turns out that, despite Mack's testimony that her ex told her he was going to kill her, the jury was unable to agree on the attempted murder charges. Instead, they found Mack's attacker guilty on 29 of the charges. After the verdict was read, Mack told the judge that she still fears for her life. She believes that if War Machine does get out of prison, he will kill her.
On the other hand, War Machine claims that he is a changed person now. He says that despite battling grief and depression during his prison stay, he has changed and turned to religion. Rather than continue on his violent path, Christy Mack's attacker claims that he is trying to be a role model behind bars. Whether he changes or not, that won't make up for the physical and emotional damage done to Mack and others.
