Last night at UFC Fight Night 105, "The Black Beast," Derrick Lewis solidified himself as one of the premier fighters in the UFC's heavyweight division by knocking out long-time contender Travis Browne. As exciting as the fight itself was, perhaps even more exciting was the post-fight interview Lewis gave to commentator Brian Stann.
Derrick Lewis clarifies what happened in round one
During round one, Browne hurt Lewis considerably with a kick to the body. In fact, he hurt him so badly that Lewis no longer thought it was important to protect his face.
He dropped his hands to his stomach and grimaced in pain. At least, that is the story the video footage tells. Lewis himself told quite a different one. “I just gotta do number 2, that’s all,” he said. “It’s not really hurt from the kick. I just got a boo boo.” Whether or not that is true, there is still a lot left to unpack here.
Derrick Lewis says that he wants to take some time off
With this being his fifth fight in 378 days, it does not come as a surprise that Lewis would like to take some time off to be with his family. What is a bit surprising is how he decided to tell the MMA world. “I feel like I just need some time off,” he said. “I don’t want to hear nothing about not fighting in the next three months.
Plus, all the training and all the sex I’ve been getting, my body needs some time off.” That is a strange way to put it. Is it not? Either way, the interview is not over just yet.
Derrick Lewis brings up Travis Browne's personal issues
It has been well documented the Browne was accused of domestic abuse by his ex-wife and Instagram model, Jenna Webb, after she posted pictures of numerous bruises on her body.
Since his split with Webb (and nearly a year before then), Browne has been dating former bantamweight champion and UFC superstar Ronda Rousey. So, when asked about his victory over Browne, Lewis casually brought up both of those things. “I just knew I had a bigger heart than him,” Lewis said. “He call himself a man, but he likes to put his hands on women.
So, forget that guy. I got much more heart than he has. Where’s Ronda Rousey’s fine ass at?”.
Lewis has become known for giving interesting post-fight interviews, but this one has been by far is most entertaining. Hopefully, he continues his winning streak so we can enjoy even more of them.
