Matt Groening, who is best known for creating the comic strip "Life in Hell" and animated series "The Simpsons" and "Futurama," is teaming up with Netflix to create a new animated series. First announced about a year ago, “Disenchantment” is set in medieval times and will follow a heavy drinking princess named Bean. Bean will be joined by her two companions, Elfo the elf and Luci her personal demon. Just yesterday, we received the first artwork for the series, which revealed that the show will continue with the same artistic style as Groening’s previous shows “Futurama” and “The Simpsons.” You can see what all three main characters will look like below.

Reports by Deadline presented most of the information used in this article.

What being on Netflix means for the show

Disenchantment” will mark Matt Groening’s first show to not first premiere on Fox. While "Futurama" did air on Comedy Central for several years after being originally canceled by Fox, it seems Groening is looking to do something a little different with “Disenchantment.” Being a streaming service, Netflix can get away with a lot more than a network channel like Fox can. Swearing doesn’t need to be beeped out and some animated shows on Netflix like “F is for Family” and “Bigmouth” even include nudity. It’s hard to say how far “Disenchantment” will deviate from Groening’s past shows, but I think it’s safe to say there will still be plenty of Groening’s trademark traits present in the show, like lovable idiots and jerks.

The show’s voice talents

“Disenchantment” boasts a pretty great voice cast so far, with Abbi Jacobson voicing Princess Bean, Nat Faxon as Elfo, and Eric Andre as Luci. This isn’t Abbi Jacobson’s first voice role on Netflix, as she previously voiced recurring character Emily in "BoJack Horseman." Nat Faxon is also no stranger to voice acting having performed various bit roles on animated shows including “American Dad,” “SuperMansion,” “Robot Chicken,” and “TripTank.” Eric Andre of “The Eric Andre Show” fame, while maybe not as experienced in voice acting has provided voices for both “American Dad” and “Robot Chicken” as well.

With how hilarious he is on “The Eric Andre Show” I have no concerns about him being able to give a stellar performance. Lastly, according to Deadline “Disenchantment” will also see the return of many veteran voice actors who have worked on Groening’s shows in the past, including John DiMaggio, Billy West, Maurice LaMarche, and Tress MacNeille.

All in all, it looks like “Disenchantment” is shaping up to be a fun series. The medieval premise should make for plenty of great jokes as Groening as proved before with “Futurama” that he can run with other time periods with masterful skill. Netflix has ordered 20 episodes of the series so far, but only the first ten will premiere this year on August 17. It’s unknown if the other ten will premiere later this year or at some point next year in 2019.
