“Disenchanted,” Matt Groening’s sendup of the fantasy genre, is due to drop on Netflix on August 17, according to Deadline Hollywood. The series is set in the Kingdom of Dreamland where Princess Bean, who likes to drink to excess when she is not having adventures, resides. Her companions include a little green elf named Elfo and her own personal demon named Luci who looks more like an imp. The three adventurers are voiced by Abbi Johnson, Nat Faxon, and Eric Andre respectively.

‘The Simpsons’ the longest-running scripted show in history

Groening has become rich and famous for subverting old tried-and true-genres.

“The Simpsons” recently beat out “Gunsmoke” as the longest-running scripted television series. The series depicts the animated misadventures of a dim-witted nuclear power plant worker named Homer, his long-suffering wife Marge, their brainy and left-wing daughter Lisa, and their bratty son Bart in the fictional town of Springfield. The show is populated with broadly drawn and eccentric characters who have not aged or changed in 30 years, though in at least one case, the actress voicing Bart’s teacher has died.

‘Futurama’ a science fiction comedy

Groening’s other famous series was “Futurama,” his take on science fiction. The premise of the series was that in the year 2000 a hapless pizza delivery boy named Fry stumbles into a suspended animation tube and wakes up 1000 years later.

He finds himself in the employ of a space-faring delivery company owned by an aging mad scientist, a beautiful one-eyed mutant pilot, a Jamaican bureaucrat, a lobster creature doctor, an Asian Martian heiress, and a larcenous robot. The series was canceled once, then brought back, then canceled again. This time, the cast of characters and the adventures spanned the entire universe and time itself from the beginning to the end.

Reruns live on, naturally, on both Comedy Central and the SyFy Channel.

‘Disenchantment’ a fantasy comedy

We don’t know much about the plotlines that “Disenchantment” will be playing with, except that the three adventurers will be “encountering ogres, sprites, harpies, imps, trolls, walruses, and lots of human fools.” That sounds like the situation of a fantasy roleplaying game in which the DM is both sleep deprived and a little bit high.

Even more amusing, the logline for the show reads, “A princess, an elf, and a demon walk into a bar.” One can endlessly provide all sorts of punch lines.

Other characters will be voiced by Bill West and John Dimaggio, who voiced Fry and Bender the Robot in “Futurama.”
