The Met Gala is one of fashion's biggest nights. On May 7, 2018, various Celebrities went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, to showcase their styles for the "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination" theme. Celebrities tried their best to embody the theme by incorporating various styles, materials and colors. This article will explore the fashion of various celebrities who attended this event.

Celebrities who went all out

Singer Rihanna is known for her bold fashion styles, and her outfit at the Met Gala is no less than bold.

It was reported by Vogue that Rihanna wore a custom outfit "Maison Margiela by John Galliano, Christian Louboutin shoes, Maria Tash jewelry, Cartier jewelry, Konstantino jewelry, and with a custom Judith Leiber Couture clutch." Rihanna's idea of the theme was a pope inspired look. Her headpiece is like a Catholic pope's mitre, which is a ceremonial headdress with two peeks. Rihanna's outfit also consists of a short strapless dress, with a long trench like jacket. According to Entertainment Tonight, the pearls and crystals on her outfit took 250 hours to sew. Another celebrity who went for the papal look was Greta Gerwig, who went for a more simple monk inspired outfit.

Actress and singer Zendaya took on a different approach by embodying a historical religious figure Joan of Arc.

It was reported by Vogue that Zendaya wore "Atelier Versace, Tiffany & Co. jewelry, and Jimmy Choo shoes." Zendaya's Joan of Arc inspired look was full out, because her outfit consisted of real chain mail and "page boy bangs." Other celebrities who went with this idea were Michelle Williams and Shailene Woodley, but Zendaya truly pulled this look off.

Singer Katy Perry took an even different take on the '"Heavenly Bodies" theme. She showed up wearing an angel inspired outfit. According to The Guardian, "Katy Perry arrived wearing a giant pair of feathered wings with her gold chainmail Versace mini dress and thigh-high boots." The angel wings are massive, and one can only imagine how she was able to walk around carrying the wings on her back, without hitting other people.

Irina Shayk and Evan Rachel Woods also took the angel approach, by incorporating small gold feathers on their dresses, but Katy Perry made the biggest statement with her look.

Singer Jennifer Lopez was also bold with her ornate outfit. Her inspiration came from "church architectural decoration." It was reported by The Guardian that Lopez turned to "Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing to design her heavily embellished corset gown, featuring her favourite thigh-revealing slit." Her look features a dramatic feather train, and an early Christian mosaic bodice. The mosaic includes an ornate cross on her chest. Other celebrities turned to architecture for inspiration, such as Ariana Grande's Michelangelo inspired look, and Gigi Hadid’s stained-glass inspired outfit.

Celebrities who kept their outfits simple

Some celebrities chose to stay simple by either incorporating the theme subtly or by not even incorporating the theme in their outfits. Kim Kardashian is an example of this. According to Vogue, Kim wore "Versace and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry." Her gold dress was simple, and she only incorporated the theme by having stitched crosses on her dress. Her hair was pulled back in a simple, but sleek ponytail.

Another celebrity who kept things simple was Kim's sister Kylie Jenner. Kylie came with her boyfriend Travis Scott who wore "Christian Louboutin", while Kylie wore "Alexander Wang and Chopard jewelry." Both outfits were black, and therefore they were matching, but they did not really embrace the theme.

Kylie also wore small sunglasses.

Model Gisele Bündchen also kept things simple, by not incorporating the theme. According to The Social, "Giselle went to prom, complete with matching dyed shoes." Even though one can argue that her Versace dress is beautiful, Giselle misses the mark by not incorporating any inspiration from the "Heavenly Bodies" theme.

Actress Scarlett Johansson sadly does not include any elements of this year's theme. Scarlett's outfit consists of "Jimmy Choo shoes" and "Marchese." Her dress is a beautiful burgundy color, and she looks stunning in it, but unfortunately it does not go with the Met Gala's theme. However, she does look wonderful, and happy with her handsome boyfriend Colin Jost.
