Five-time Emmy Award nominee Idris Elba is speaking out about his relationship with Marvel. The 45-year-old actor, who will be returning to the mcu in next month's "Thor: Ragnarok," recently opened up about his desires to have a larger role in the franchise. Elba currently plays the Asgardian gatekeeper Heimdall and recently shared to Entertainment Weekly that he is a fan of superhero films, unlike some actors his age who may have grown tired of playing the same roles over and over again. Admitting that he had "never felt that way," Elba says that right now, he wishes he had an even bigger role in the MCU.
Idris Elba on being 'more present' in the MCU
In the upcoming "Thor: Ragnarok," Idris Elba reprises the role of Heimdall, which the actor called "a little part." He does appreciate that Heimdall is a supporting character, as it frees up his schedule to do other films, such as "The Dark Tower" that came out in August, the recently released "The Mountain Between Us," and "Molly's Game," out in December. Nonetheless, Elba shared to EW that, "I wish I was more present in the Marvel family. I like what I have, but I also wish that I had a bigger character in the Marvel universe."
Actor on wanting to become a superhero
Idris Elba's desires to have a larger role should not be taken in a bad light, as the "Thor: Ragnarok" actor just wants to take on bigger acting responsibilities.
In fact, he said that the experience "[has] been great, but I kinda think I need a bit more. I want to be a superhero. I like the idea of that." Now whether or not he will play a larger role in "Avengers: Infinity War" and its sequel, remains to be seen. In fact, it is highly possible that he would play a larger role then, as some fans have come up with a theory that the final Infinity Stone, the Soul Stone, is in fact in Heimdall's possession.
Soul Stone might be Heimdall himself
Like the Mind Stone that turned into the MCU character Vision, it's possible that the final Infinity Stone is in fact with Idris Elba's Heimdall, and may be revealed in "Thor: Ragnarok." Nerdist reported on this theory back in April, saying that in "Avengers: Age of Ultron," Thor had a vision in which Heimdall had gone blind, which may be indicative that the Soul Stone is what makes him see all souls in the universe.
If he had gone blind, it's a possibility that Hela stole it from him to free herself and wreak havoc on Asgard. These fan theories will be put to the test when "Thor: Ragnarok" hits theaters this November 3.
