It took a little while before the hit sci-fi/action film “Pacific Rim” made a comeback for a sequel this coming spring and fans are really delighted to hear the return of the gigantic robots next year. Others even thought that the first film was a one-shot entry, but it turned out to be the other way around with as the franchise will have a movie trilogy with a chance of a crossover to another popular movie franchise. If the future films will be a huge success, the upcoming film’s director Steven S. DeKnight, mentioned that the franchise is possible to expand in some ways like a crossover with Legendary Monster Universe’s Godzilla and Kong.
Kaiju treat returns
Before all of the crossovers to happen, there are two more films in the original franchise with the latest one making a spring premiere. The next year’s sequel will take place ten years after the events of the first movie, and the protagonist’s role will shift to Jake Pentecost played by John Boyega. Jake was the son of the hero General Stacker Pentecost played by Idris Elba in the previous installment. Jake is running away from responsibility his whole life, but when the Kaiju threat returns, he will join the Jaeger program to fight the renewed Kaijus whom his father work so hard to defeat.
In the upcoming film, we will see some new and familiar faces including Mako Mori played by Rinko Kikuchi who will return as the adopted sister of Jake Pentecost.
The scientist duo Dr. Newt Geiszler and Dr. Herman Gottlieb will also return to provide the Jaegers about the new and evolved enemies. “Pacific Rim: Uprising” will run on exactly two hours which is 12 minutes shorter than its predecessor. “For me as somebody that loves movies and watches movies, two hours is always right around the sweet spot,” director DeKnight explains.
Jaegers with Godzilla and Kong
Legendary is now at full throttle on expanding its massive Monster Universe franchise with “Godzilla” and “Kong: Skull Island.” “Godzilla: King of Monsters” is also on its post-production and not to mention the early plans for a “Godzilla Vs. Kong” shortly. However, the project that most fans are looking forward to is the bout between the Jaegers and Godzilla or Kong.
According to DeKnight on an interview at New York Comic-Con, the pitch has very much been discussed. “I think it would be fantastic to have the Pacific Rim universe join Legendary’s Monster Universe, it seems like a natural step,” said the director. However, DeKnight added that nothing is for sure for now, and the project is merely at a theoretical at this point, but he is looking forward to it to become a reality.
For now let’s just grit our teeth, cross our fingers and wait for the upcoming “Pacific Rim: Uprising” on March 23, 2018.
