Even if it is not yet the time for the next “Mission Impossible” film, Tom Cruise is rolling well as he works with director Doug Liman – once again – ‬in the 2017 biographical crime movie, “American Made”.

Although competition is tough this September, with the release of “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” and “It”, “American Made” is doing quite well. According to Variety, the film – based on Barry Seal’s story – has already earned over $60 million, proving a great start. Critics also approve of the film as they rate it at 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, praising Tom Cruise’s performance overall.

Doug Liman and Tom Cruise previously worked together in the 2014 film, “Live Die Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow”, in which critics also admired both of their work. Unfortunately, it was not the same when it came to domestic sales. This current film could still make it big if it tops the sequel of the Kingsman franchise and the horror reboot.

Cruise’s role, Barry Seal, was a Trans World Airlines pilot before he became one of the famous drug smugglers in American history. He smuggled for the Medellin Cartel before their organization ceased to exist in 1993. With Seal’s skills and greed, he skipped jail time by approaching the US government until he became a DEA informant.

Cruise enjoyed filming ‘American Made’

Unlike the actor’s previous roles, he successfully depicts an anti-hero in this film, along with Sarah Wright who plays Lucy Seal, Domhnall Gleeson as Monty Schafer, Jesse Plemons as Sherriff Downing and Jayma Mays as Dana Sibota.

The actor previously admitted that he was having the time of his life shooting this film.

He did perform most of his stunts – as usual – and the best part of it was when he actually flew a plane – a little higher from when he sat a top of the Burj Khalifa.

Behind the scenes

Behind the scenes, Cruise revealed that they had to shoot the plane scene practically because of a budget cut saying, “That really is the only way we could do it because we did not have the budget for visual effects, you know.

We put restrictions on ourselves. This is what this film should cost and this is the box that needs to fit into.” As seen in Hollywood.com’s behind-the-scenes video, the film was shot on air while Liman is beside Cruise during the process.

“American Made” will premiere in the United States on September 29 starring Tom Cruise, Sarah Wright, and Domhnall Gleeson, directed by Doug Liman.
