Viewers might see the return of Lionel Richie on television as he judges the reality singing competition, “American Idol,” Variety reported. The singer will join the other celebrities slated to judge the upcoming new season which is set to begin auditions in October.

Richie is also a record producer and a songwriter. He began his career in the late 1960s as a member of Commodores, a band that used to play funk and soul music. He started his solo career in 1982, and became known for his hits such as “Hello,” “All Night Long,” and “Endless Love.”

‘American Idol’ judging panel

If his stint on the reality TV show takes place, Richie will be joining country singer Luke Bryan and other celebrities poised to make an appearance.

According to another report in Variety, Bryan has been confirmed to join the show, becoming the second country performer to judge the competition.

Australian country artist Keith Urban appeared on the judging panel for four seasons. He joined other artists such as Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler, and Harry Connick Jr.

Bryan had earlier been uncertain about confirming his participation on the show because of issues with the talent fee. He demanded a talent fee that will match his talent and contributions to the music industry.

This country singer recently launched his single “Light It Up” from his upcoming album. He is about to start his concert tour in Nebraska and Lincoln with his co-artist Jon Pardi, the report added.

Rumored judges

Aside from Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, Katy Perry is also slated to join the upcoming season of “American Idol.” This will be the first time that the international pop icon will appear on the show. Meanwhile, more names on the possible celebrities to judge the show came out. The names included Charlie Puth and Lady Gaga.

Lady Gaga’s former manager allegedly went into a meeting with FremantleMedia, the company that produces the reality singing show. Aside from her, even pop singer Meghan Trainor allegedly met with the company, Variety reported.

Keith Urban might also return in the upcoming season. Other celebrities speculated to be part of the show included Dolly Parton and rapper Common.

“American Idol” has just concluded its tour bus auditions a few weeks ago. The production team will soon start shooting the auditions with the judges happening in various locations in the United States. Among the most noteworthy celebrities who have graced the show as part of the judging panel, are Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, and Simon Cowell.
