Daddy Yankee is speaking out on behalf of his fellow Puerto Ricans who are now facing a huge crisis after Hurricane Maria battered the U.S. territory just a few days ago. In an interview with CNN on Monday, the "Despacito" artist asked the public and the government to do their part to help the people from his homeland.
Hurricane Maria hits Puerto Rico
The artist revealed that his family, including his wife and daughter, are still living in the U.S. territory. He also reminded the public that Puerto Ricans are also American citizens who should benefit from federal funds.

The 40-year-old singer-rapper even asked the viewers to visualize the scenes from the official music video of "Despacito" which was filmed in the shanty town of La Perla in Puerto Rico. "Watching the images of the video and comparing it to the images I've seen so far - it's devastated," he added.
He emphasized that a lot of people from his native town are suffering after losing their homes and livelihood due to Hurricane Maria. The natural disaster has also knocked out electricity across the island so hospitals and other establishments stopped operating.
The singer asked the U.S. government to be proactive in responding to the needs of Puerto Ricans displaced by Hurricane Maria.
Daddy Yankee also revealed that he has already donated $100,000 to Feed America and another $100,000 to Red Cross as part of his effort to help those in dire need of assistance.
Celebrities call for donations to aid Puerto Rico
Several other celebrities are also stepping up to extend a helping hand to fellow Americans affected by the devastating calamity.
Jennifer Lopez, who has family members living in Puerto Rico, is reportedly donating $1 million to relief efforts in the island.
"Alex Rodriguez and I are utilizing all of our resources and relationships in entertainment, sports, and business to garner support,” the singer said at a press conference.
The "Ain't Your Mama" artist also uploaded a video message on Instagram to urge her followers to donate and help the victims of Hurricane Maria.
Gina Rodriguez also used social media to extend her thoughts to Puerto Rico and asked her fans to contribute to the rehabilitation of the island.

Ricky Martin revealed that he has not heard from his brother in Puerto Rico since Hurricane Maria hit the island. "We don’t know where he is. I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s dealing with this uncertainty,” he added.
The singer also launched his own fundraising effort to help his fellow Puerto Ricans recover from the devastating calamity.
