HBO announced on Monday that their system had been hacked. The firm further added that the hackers were able to steal information, but that their network’s email system is protected. HBO CEO Richard Plepler said that the system was breached by hackers, but that their system as a whole has not been compromised. He further added to his statements, suggesting that HBO is already on a look-out for companies to who would help them monitor the employees as well as their Financial Accounts.
The story behind the hacking
The hacking incident took place sometime over the past weekend, and the hackers emailed the network, stating that they were able to gain access to HBO’s internal network, email systems, and data storage. It did not take them long to setup an archived version of HBO’s website and post all the unreleased episodes out for download and viewing for the consumers.
There were unreleased episodes of many of the leading TV Shows including “Insecure and Baller,” along with two of the upcoming “Game of Thrones” episodes as well. This website-in-question was taken down almost immediately, and HBO did not confirm the news until much later.
Following which, several reports of the company filing a report with Google with regards to this issue started emerging online. Google and many other internet companies’ fall in the purview of taking immediate action when such incidents occur. Google did what any other internet company would usually do – the search-giant took the alleged links down almost instantaneously. The website owners were immediately faced with the violation of copyright laws and warned of any such future moves.
Previous incident
Interestingly, when Google was approached for a comment on this matter, none responded to the same. Even HBO representatives decided to stay shut on the matter. This isn’t the first time that a major TV entertainment channel has been hacked.
Previously as well, companies like Sony as well as Warner Bros have been hacked, and many of their films have been leaked as well. Take, for example, the recent WannaCry ransomware attack wherein Warner Bros was threatened, and later one of its unreleased movies, “Pirates of the Caribbean” had been leaked online.
