Another week and yet again a new blockbuster film has released and automatically moved into the number one spot at the box office. This time it is is the latest big superhero movie of the summer, Sony's Columbia Pictures 'Spider-Man: Homecoming', which stars Tom Holland as Spider-man.
'Spider-man: Homecoming' spins a superb opening
'Spider-man: Homecoming' easily took the top spot at the domestic box office, stringing up a total of $117 million dollars, easily clear of last week's number one in 'Despicable Me 3'.
which made barely less than $35 million. The film premiered in 4,348 theaters, racking up an average of $26,912 for each one over its three-day weekend premiere. These numbers were better than the estimates of independent trackers who only sensed a pre-weekend estimate of between $90 to $110 million for the movie. Overseas 'Homecoming' made $139.5 million for a worldwide total of $256.5 million for its opening weekend. This is already $81 million more than its reported production budget of $175 million. The movie only launched in about 60% of international territories, having yet to open in countries like China, Japan, France, Germany and Spain.
More box office numbers behind Spiderman
These numbers put the newest Spiderman film in rarified superhero movie air, as it became the seventh Marvel Cinematic Universe film and eleventh superhero film to have an $100 million or more domestic opening weekend. It also had the second-highest opening weekend in Sony's studio history, only behind 2007's 'Spider-Man 3' which made $151.5 million. It has also had the third-largest opening weekend this year only behind 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' at $146.5 million and 'Beauty and the Beast' at $174.7 million.
It's not just making money, but getting good reviews
As of right now 'Spider-man: Homecoming' has a 93% certified fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes from 212 critic reviews.
This puts it just below 2004's 'Spider-man 2' and 2008's 'The Dark Knight' and 'Iron Man', for the highest score ever for a live action superhero movie on the site. The fans have also agreed with 69,571 reviews on the site giving the movie a 92%.
The movie is also the first Spider-man film to get an 'A' rating on CinemaScore, as 2002's 'Spider-man', '2004's Spider-man 2' and 2012's 'The Amazing Spider-man' all only got 'A-' ratings. Aggregate review site Metacritic was more down on the film, giving it a critic score of 73 over 51 reviews. Users on the site have given the movie a 7.7 out of 356 reviews.
