The new trailer for “Star Trek: Discovery” was rolled out at Comic-Con recently. Showing a lot of scenes that suggests that the galaxy is on the verge of war between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. It was also revealed that the Main Character, First Officer Michael Burnham, has a curious connection with a well-known member of the USS Enterprise whose five-year mission is due to begin ten years later.

The Klingons in the new Trek

The Klingons have served as one of the more interesting “Star Trek” aliens since the very beginning of the franchise.

At first, they were sworn enemies of the Federation, a warrior race that lived for nothing but conquest.

By the period of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” rolled around, the relationship between the Klingons and the Federation had become more complicated, still capable of being tense, but friendly enough that at least one of that race, Lt. Worf, served on board the Enterprise. It looks like that the new show is going to explore the beginnings of the conflict that caused such grief to Captain Kirk.

Who is First Officer Michael Burnham?

The big reveal, however, took place at one of the panels. The principle character of the new series, a young woman named Michael Burnham, First Officer of the USS Discovery, is none other than the adoptive sister of Mr.

Spock. It seems that years ago Sarek and Amanda took her in as a child when her parents were killed, and she was raised on Vulcan. The Vulcan diplomat recommended her to the captain of the Discovery.

Naturally, this little back story detail has raised all sorts of questions. How was it in the decades of TV shows and movies in which Spock appeared that he did not mention that he had a sister, a human one at that?

To be sure that idea of a human being raised in a Vulcan household, with all of the cultural and biological differences that exist, is an intriguing one, to say the least.

The showrunners promise that they will have a ready explanation as to why Burnham was out of Spock’s life by the time of classic Trek. So far they are keeping it a secret.
