The 2008 film “Mamma Mia!” is getting a sequel, “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!”. The film’s original cast including Meryl Streep (Donna Sheridan), Pierce Brosnan (Sam Carmichael), Amanda Seyfried (Sophie Sheridan), Stellan Skarsgard (Bill Anderson), Colin Firth (Harry Bright), Christine Baranski (Tanya Chesham-Leigh) and Dominic Cooper (Sky, Sophie’s fiancé) have all been confirmed to reprise their roles in the upcoming sequel.

Sequel details

Although the main story of the sequel is still a secret, it has been reported that "Here We Go Again!" will both be a sequel and a prequel.

The story line will be going back and forth in time to show how the relationships were forged in the past and how it resonates in the present.

Ol Parker is set to direct and write the upcoming Mamma Mia! sequel. ABBA’s Benny Anderson and Björn Ulvaeus will be part of the production; they will be executive producers and music consultants for the film. The film is to feature more of ABBA’s famous songs that were not included in the original movie.

According to "Film New Europe," local media have already spotted the production crew arriving on the island of Vis in Croatia, compared to the original film being shot in Skopelos Island in Greece.

Lily James joins the cast

Lily James has been cast to play the younger Donna, also played by Meryl Streep in the original film.

James gained much popularity after playing the titular role of Cinderella, where she also sang “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes” for the 2015 film.

It is known in the first film that Donna was in a band called "Donna and the Dynamos" with her friends, Tanya and Rosie (played by Julie Walters in the original movie) in their younger years.

It will be interesting to see James in the role.

She is also seen in the series “War & Peace” as Natasha Rostova, “Downton Abbey” as Lady Rose MacClare. James also played Juliet in Kenneth Brannagh’s West End production of “Romeo and Juliet” opposite of Richard Madden. James starred in the film version of “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” as Elizabeth Bennet and recently in “Baby Driver” alongside Ansel Elgort.

“Mamma Mia!” is a musical based on the hits of the favorite band ABBA. It is the story of Sophie who invites 3 of her mother Donna’s former lovers to her wedding to find out who her father is. The original stage musical “Mamma Mia!” originated from West End and is the 8th longest running show in Broadway history.

The sequel “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!” is set to be released ten years after the release of the original film – July 20, 2018.
